A day spent discovering the historic narrow-gauge railway of the Renon Plateau
Every year, on the Renon Plateau (known as Ritten in German), in the municipality of Renon/Ritten in the province of Bolzano, the Renon Railway Day—known in German as Rittner Bahnl Tag—is celebrated. It is an event designed for fans of historic railways and families eager to discover a piece of South Tyrol's technical and cultural heritage, featuring workshops, vintage railcars, and panoramic views of the Dolomites.
The Renon Railway (Rittner Bahn) was inaugurated in 1907 to connect Bolzano to the sunny Renon Plateau. It originally included a rack railway section that overcame an elevation gain of over 900 meters, which was decommissioned in 1966 with the opening of the cable car. Today, the 6.8 km narrow-gauge section between Soprabolzano (Maria Assunta) and Collalbo remains in operation, still served by the antique wooden railcars dating back to 1907-1909, with their characteristic white-and-brown slatted exterior. It is a small jewel of alpine engineering and one of the most beloved attractions in South Tyrol.
The event offers a guided tour that combines the discovery of the depots—the workshops where historic railcars are stored and maintained—with an actual trip aboard a vintage train. The meeting point is at the Collalbo station at 10:00 AM, where the guided tour begins. With experts Martin Broy and Klaus Demar, participants learn anecdotes, curiosities, and technical details about the railway's history, both in Collalbo and Soprabolzano.
The Renon Railway Day is suitable for all ages, with special rates for children. The initiative is organized by the Renon Tourist Association and offers an authentic way to experience the plateau, blending the magic of vintage trains with the beauty of the landscapes stretching between Soprabolzano, Collalbo, and the Dolomite peaks. Participation is by mandatory reservation only, due to limited capacity.
