About Reina dou Lacë

At the Croix-Noire Arena in Aosta, the Reina dou Lacë competition, the "queen of milk": a challenge between the best Valdostana dairy cows that attracts breeders, enthusiasts, and families every spring. Featuring regional and national pedigree book competitions and the regional livestock market, it is one of the most cherished livestock events in the Aosta Valley, deeply connected to the culture of the Batailles de Reines and the life of alpine farms.

The queen of milk from the Aosta Valley

The Reina dou Lacë Competition — literally "the queen of milk" in Aosta Valley Patois — is the competition that awards the best dairy cows of the Valdostana breed. It is held at the Croix-Noire Arena, on the outskirts of Aosta, and is organized by AREV (Association Régionale Éleveurs Valdôtains). It is a major spring event that attracts breeders, enthusiasts, and families from all over the region every year.

A unique livestock tradition

The Valdostana cattle breed is one of the region's identity symbols, linked to the famous tradition of the Batailles de Reines, the contests between queen cows. The Reina dou Lacë Competition, however, highlights the animals' milk production and morphology, in an event that combines genetic selection, farming culture, and popular celebration. Alongside the competition, the national pedigree book competition for Valdostana cows and the regional competition for dairy goats are also held.

The Regional Livestock Market

A few days after the competition, the Croix-Noire Arena hosts the Regional Market of Valdostana breed cows, a moment for buying, selling, and meeting for local breeders. The combination of these two events represents the heart of the Aosta Valley's spring livestock season.
