A historical re-enactment of the ancient crafts and traditions of Ovindoli

The Re Zappone Festival is an annual summer event that brings the farming and artisan heritage of Ovindoli back to life. This mountain village, nestled on the Altopiano delle Rocche in the province of L'Aquila, lies in the heart of Abruzzo, just a stone's throw from the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park. Established in 2023 through the initiative of the local administration—with special support from councilor Leonello Scorrano—and in collaboration with the local Pro Loco, the festival aims to tell the story of Ovindoli's origins, its people's beliefs, and the traditional way of life centered around shepherding, agriculture, and ancient crafts.
The heart of the event is a trail that begins at Piazza San Rocco and winds along the main street of the historic center. Along the route, authentic "corners of history" are set up: folk music resonates through the streets while local artisans, merchants, and farmers present their history and products. It is a way to reconstruct the joyful and collaborative atmosphere of mountain villages of the past, enhancing the community's historical roots and strengthening a sense of belonging.
During the festival, local restaurants offer special menus dedicated to the gastronomic traditions of the Marsica region, ensuring that the discovery of ancient crafts is paired with the discovery of local flavors. The imaginative and creative re-enactment culminates with the Carraggio and traditional games, moments that involve both young and old, restoring the communal spirit of village festivals. Live music performances and themed decorations also bring the evenings to life throughout the center.
Set at an altitude of over 1,300 meters, the Re Zappone Festival is also an opportunity to discover Ovindoli and its surroundings: a village that is a well-known ski resort in the winter and a base for hiking and outdoor activities in the summer. The event is part of the rich summer calendar of the Municipality of Ovindoli (province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo) and attracts visitors from neighboring towns and major cities, all eager to rediscover the intangible heritage of Abruzzo's folk traditions.
The Re Zappone Festival is expected to return to Ovindoli, in the province of L'Aquila, in 2026 as a summer event dedicated to the village's farming and artisan heritage. The established format includes a journey through history starting from Piazza San Rocco along the main street, featuring folk music, demonstrations of ancient crafts, traditional menus, and the re-enactment of the Carraggio with vintage games.
The official dates and the full program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published: they will be announced by the Municipality of Ovindoli and the Pro Loco in the weeks leading up to the event. This page will be updated as soon as information becomes available.
