Celebrating the traditional sweets of the Ravanusa Carnival
The Raviola and Totomè Festival takes place in Ravanusa, a town in the province of Agrigento, Sicily. It is held as part of the Historic Ravanusa Carnival, one of the few carnival celebrations officially recognized by the Italian Ministry of Culture. The festival transforms Piazza F. Crispi into a culinary workshop where the town's two signature sweets take center stage through tastings, demonstrations, and community gatherings.
At the heart of the celebration are two local confectionery specialties, traditionally prepared during the carnival season:
Both belong to the peasant tradition and are considered "relational foods," deeply tied to celebration, sharing, and family memories. Because of this strong bond with the community, the totomè and raviola have been awarded the Municipal Designation (De.Co.) in Ravanusa, a recognition that protects them as part of the town's cultural and gastronomic heritage.
During the event, the square is filled with guided tastings, live cooking shows, photo exhibitions, video screenings, and musical performances, creating a festive atmosphere that weaves together flavors and folklore. The festival complements the other events of the Historic Ravanusa Carnival, from the parade of allegorical floats to evening shows in the square, offering visitors a complete experience of taste and tradition.
More than just a food festival, this event is a celebration of Ravanusa's local identity. Organized by the Pro Loco Ravanusa in collaboration with the Municipality of Ravanusa and supported by the Sicilian Region, it showcases how a small town in the Agrigento hinterland preserves and promotes its roots, turning its traditional sweets into a symbol of hospitality and community.
In 2026, the Raviola and Totomè Festival held a particularly significant edition as part of the 38th Historic Ravanusa Carnival (February 13-17, 2026). On Monday, February 16, at the Municipal Library and then in Piazza F. Crispi, the ceremony for the awarding of the Municipal Designation (De.Co.) to the totomè and raviola took place, with Ravanusa being recognized as a Guardian of Territorial Identity.
The square hosted guided tastings, live cooking shows, a photo exhibition, and video screenings dedicated to the two sweets, while the Carnival enlivened the town with parades of allegorical floats, shows, music, and dance evenings until Shrove Tuesday. An edition that combined taste, culture, and popular celebration in the heart of the Agrigento province.
