The eight districts of Scisciano compete through traditional games, vibrant colors, and music
The Rainbow Festival is the most anticipated event of the year in Scisciano, a small town in the Metropolitan City of Naples, Campania, located just a few kilometers from Nola at the foot of the Vesuvius area. Born as an initiative of the parish youth center, the festival has evolved into a true collective ritual: for two evenings in mid-to-late June, the entire town moves outdoors, amidst parades, colorful flags, and balloons hanging along the streets of the districts.
The name says it all: each district has its own color, and together, when the teams enter the arena, they form a rainbow. This is not a tourist event staged for show, but a grassroots celebration animated by the volunteers of PGS Oragiò and supported by the Municipality of Scisciano.
The heart of the festival is the challenge between the eight historic districts of Scisciano, which spend weeks preparing choreographies, banners, and teams:
Each district parades in its own colors and is presented to the public on the first evening, before taking to the field the following day. The competition is serious but always fair: the organizers' stated goal is sportsmanship, not victory at any cost.
The challenges revisit the games of yesteryear, those that grandparents and great-grandparents played in the town squares, re-proposed to the younger generation as an educational tool and a living memory:
These are simple disciplines that require no expensive equipment and put all participants on equal footing: this is precisely why they work so well as a glue between generations and different areas of the town.
Behind the lights and music lies a journey that lasts all year. The young volunteers of the Oragiò youth center work with the children of the districts on an educational theme that changes with each edition, giving the festival its title and inspiring moments of reflection: in 2024 «With the young, for the young», in 2025 «We are a single reality, together beyond differences», in 2026 «Respect is love that grows». There is no shortage of spiritual moments, with the presence in some editions of the Bishop of the Diocese of Nola, and a focus on solidarity: in the past, proceeds from the food stalls have been donated to missionary projects.
Alongside the challenges, the festival offers food stalls featuring the flavors of local cuisine, cabaret shows, entertainment, and musical evenings that last until late at night, with DJ sets and guests from the Neapolitan scene. The natural stage is the Circumvesuviana station square, which for two days becomes an arena, dance floor, and town square all at once, while the opening parade traditionally starts from Piazza XX Settembre, in front of the town hall.
Visitors from outside will find one of the most authentic village festivals in the province of Naples: no folkloric reconstruction for tourists, but an entire community — children, teenagers, parents, grandparents — coming together over two June evenings. It is also an excellent opportunity to discover the Nola area, an agricultural territory between Naples and Irpinia, often overlooked by classic Campania itineraries.
For the 2026 edition, the volunteers of PGS Oragiò chose an explicit educational theme, «Respect is love that grows», expressed through moments of reflection and activities proposed to the youth of the districts.
The festival opened on Friday, June 19, with the traditional parade from Piazza XX Settembre to the Circumvesuviana station square, where the eight districts were presented: Camaldoli Montanaro, Casola, Feudo, Frocia, Palazzuolo, San Martino, Spartimento, and Torre. After the opening of the food stalls, the evening continued with «Back to the field: the hour of the champions», a nostalgic look at the games of past editions, and closed with «Waiting for midnight: Ibiza DJ & Special Animation», an event promoted by the Municipality of Scisciano as part of the 2025/2026 event program of the Metropolitan City of Naples.
Saturday, June 20 was the decisive evening: the districts entered the arena at 7:30 PM and, from 8:00 PM, the challenges between the teams took place with skill games and collective trials that determined the winner. To close, a DJ set by Martina Rossi.
By train: The Scisciano station is served by the EAV Circumvesuviana Naples–Baiano line; the station square is the festival venue, just a few steps from the tracks.
By car: Scisciano can be reached from the Nola exit of the A16 Naples–Canosa motorway, then via provincial roads for about 5 km. On festival evenings, traffic in the center is slowed down: it is advisable to arrive early and park in the side streets.
Access to the festival areas and shows is free. Only food and drinks at the stalls are for purchase.
Accommodation options in Scisciano are limited: the most convenient solutions are in Nola, Marigliano, or San Vitaliano, all just a few minutes away by car, or in Naples, which can be reached in about 40 minutes via the Circumvesuviana.
