A carnival born from the neighborhood

The Quadraro Carnival bears no resemblance to the large Italian carnivals filled with allegorical floats and grandstands. There are no sponsors or stages here: just a Roman neighborhood that self-organizes for three days, filling the streets with handmade masks, drums, and improvised costumes. The event is directed by CSOA Spartaco on Via Selinunte, one of the capital's historic social centers, supported by the Cinecittà Bene Comune territorial network. The festival spans two adjacent neighborhoods in the VII Municipality, Quadraro and Cinecittà, with incursions into the Villaggio Appio and the Parco degli Acquedotti.

The murga, the festival's beating heart

The element that makes this carnival instantly recognizable is the Murga Los Adoquines de Spartaco, a group born in the neighborhood and inspired by the Rioplatense murga tradition: a form of street musical theater where singing, acting, and dancing happen simultaneously, featuring satirical lyrics written annually about current events. The murga does not perform on a stage; it walks, stops at street corners, and engages passersby. Alongside them, clown companies and bubble performers transform sidewalks and pedestrian areas into temporary stages.

Three days, three locations

The structure of the event remains consistent year after year with few variations:

• Day One: Afternoon gathering at the C.A.T. Social Lab on Via di Campo Farnia, in Villaggio Appio, with the murga and workshops for children.
• Day Two: The pedestrian area of Via Flavio Stilicone, the commercial heart of Cinecittà, hosts comedy and clown shows.
• Day Three: The masked parade, the highlight of the event. The procession gathers in the square in front of the Church of San Policarpo, on the edge of the Parco degli Acquedotti, and winds through the neighborhood streets to Largo Spartaco, where the party continues into the evening with DJ sets and concerts.

Quadraro, a neighborhood with a memory

This is no mere decorative detail: Quadraro is the neighborhood that suffered the Nazi raid known as Operation Whale on April 17, 1944, resulting in the deportation of hundreds of men. That memory of resistance still permeates the social life of the district and is reflected in the character of the carnival, which is openly popular, anti-racist, and inclusive. In recent years, the neighborhood has also become a destination for street art enthusiasts, thanks to the MURo project, which has filled the facades between Via dei Lentuli and Via Decio Mure with murals: the carnival parade passes through much of this open-air museum.

How to participate

Admission to all events is free, and no registration is required. The public are not mere spectators but part of the procession: simply show up in costume, bring a percussion instrument if you have one, and join in. Families with children are the largest group, thanks to the afternoon schedule and the entirely flat route. At the end of the parade, CSOA Spartaco operates a community kitchen with affordable prices and traditional carnival fritters.

In the Lazio carnival calendar

In the province of Rome and throughout Lazio, the carnival season is intense, ranging from the allegorical floats of Ronciglione to the masquerades of the Castelli Romani. The Quadraro Carnival occupies a unique position: it is arguably the most successful example of a self-organized urban carnival in the capital, an event that proves how a neighborhood festival can thrive solely on the volunteer work of its residents.
