The dawn ritual descending from Terra Murata to Marina Grande
In the town of Procida, a small island in the Province of Naples, Campania, Good Friday is no ordinary day. Long before dawn, the alleys fill with footsteps, hushed voices, and the dull thud of wooden structures being moved: it is the signal that the Procession of the Mysteries is about to begin. The procession forms in the square of the Abbey of San Michele Arcangelo, in Terra Murata, the highest and oldest point of the island, and from there, it slowly descends toward the sea, reaching the port of Marina Grande.
The Mysteries are large allegorical compositions built by hand by the youth of Procida in the months leading up to Easter. They are not pulled on wheels; they are carried on shoulders, one after another, with a slowness that gives the procession its unmistakable rhythm.
Historical island associations like «I ragazzi dei Misteri», «L'isola dei Misteri», and «Venerdì Santo» work on their construction for months: collective workshops, also set up in the spaces of the former Terra Murata prison, where knowledge is passed from generation to generation without altering the original meaning of the rite.
The organization is handled by the Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Conception of the Turchini, founded in 1629 and named for the blue (turchino) color of the mozzetta worn by the brothers over their white robes, complete with hood, white shoes, and black gloves. The first written records of the procession date back to 1688: at the time, the rite served to spread Christian doctrine and even included processions of flagellants, which were later abandoned when the event took the form we know today.
Since 1728, the procession has accompanied the wooden statue of the Dead Christ, a work by the Neapolitan Carmine Lantriceni, along with that of the Our Lady of Sorrows: two of the most precious assets of Procida's artistic heritage, kept in the church of San Tommaso d'Aquino and transferred to the Abbey on the night preceding the procession.
The gathering of the Mysteries at Terra Murata takes place in the early hours of the morning; at the «call», the procession moves and begins its descent. The structure of the rite is rigorous: slow pace, silence upon leaving the abbey complex, trumpet blasts and drum rolls from the Congrega, and coordinated stops on command along the sloping streets. Those carrying the Mysteries communicate with a few shouted words — «Fermi!» (Stop!), then «uno, due, tre: giù!» (one, two, three: down!) — to set the works down without impact. The layout of the Mysteries, both at the start and upon arrival at Marina Grande, is organized in numbered spaces to avoid congestion and overtaking.
The Good Friday procession is the culmination of a journey that begins on Maundy Thursday, when the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament — the «Bianchi» (Whites) — carries the procession of the hooded Apostles around the island, visiting the altars of repose in the main churches. Finally, on Good Friday evening, the solemn Via Crucis returns the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows to the Congrega, closing the day by torchlight.
In Procida, the procession is not a tourist spectacle but a moment of collective identity: practically the entire community participates in some way, as a bearer, a builder, or a confrere. Precisely for this reason, the Congrega has established precise rules — no symbols, flags, or images unrelated to biblical themes on the Mysteries, written authorization for photographers and operators, and a ban on destroying the works at the end of the procession. Those who come to the island to witness it are guests of a living rite, one of the most recognizable aspects of the cultural image of Procida and all of Campania.
Holy Week 2026 in Procida opened on Maundy Thursday, April 2, with the Mass of the Lord's Supper and the washing of the feet at the church of Sant'Antonio da Padova, followed by the procession of the hooded Apostles organized by the Archconfraternity of the Blessed Sacrament.
The following day, Friday, April 3, the procession of the Mysteries departed at dawn from Terra Murata. The Mysteries, created in the preceding months in the island's collective workshops, were carried on shoulders along the alleys of the historic center with coordinated stops, accompanied by the trumpet blasts of the Congrega dei Turchini, until they were positioned in the eastern sector of the Marina Grande square.
For the 2026 edition, the Archconfraternity issued more detailed regulations: written registration of the Mysteries by Saturday, March 28, maximum dimensions of the works, mandatory traditional attire (white robe, belt and blue mozzetta, hood, white shoes, and black gloves), mandatory accompaniment for children aged 10 to 13 carrying small mysteries, a ban on symbols or messages unrelated to biblical themes, and written authorization for photographers and reporters.
Organization: Archconfraternity of the Immaculate Conception of the Turchini. Registration of the Mysteries by Saturday, March 28, 2026.
Procida can only be reached by sea: ferries and hydrofoils connect the island with Naples (Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa), Pozzuoli, and Ischia. During Holy Week, companies may increase the number of trips: it is advisable to check updated schedules and book in advance, especially for returning in the evening after the Via Crucis.
From the port of Marina Grande, you can walk up to Terra Murata in about 25-30 minutes, or take the local microbus. During the procession, many streets in the historic center are closed to traffic.
Participation is free and open to all: the procession takes place outdoors along the island's public streets. Visitors are responsible for maritime tickets, any accommodation, and dining expenses.
