The solemn Good Friday rite in the historic center of Nardò
In the heart of Salento, the Good Friday Procession of the Mysteries is the highlight of Holy Week in Nardò, an elegant Baroque city in the Province of Lecce, Puglia. For an entire day, the local community pauses its daily rhythm to gather around the rites of the Passion, which culminate in the evening procession of sacred statues through the streets of the historic center.
The day begins in the early afternoon with the Rite of the Agony: from 1:00 PM to 3:00 PM, a preacher reflects on the Seven Last Words of Christ. This is followed by the solemn Passion of the Lord liturgy at the Cathedral Basilica of Maria SS. Assunta in Piazza Pio XI, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli. In the evening, the city procession begins, winding slowly through almost all the streets of the old town until late at night.
At the center of the procession are the statues of the Passion: the Dead Christ and, following him, the statue of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Sorrows, dressed in black and carried on shoulders by elegantly dressed devotees. The bearers wear black tuxedos and white shirts, following a strict custom. Accompanying the slow pace of the procession is the historic Banda Verde of Nardò and the choir, who intone the famous Hymn to the Dead Christ, a funeral march composed around 1850 by Maestro Giuseppe Cacace (1828-1891) of Taranto and introduced to Nardò by Bishop Giuseppe Ricciardi (1839-1908).
The procession is a choral rite involving the Bishop, the Cathedral Chapter, and the city's confraternities and pious unions. Each confraternity is entrusted with the care and transport of the statues, a tradition rooted in past centuries. In 1930, the dramatic Unnailing of the Papier-mâché Crucifix was introduced, which still evokes deep emotion among the faithful today.
The Friday rite is preceded on Holy Thursday by the traditional visit to the Sepulchres set up in the Cathedral and churches of Nardò. The altars of repose are decorated with characteristic piatti ti sipurcu—bowls with wheat seeds, lupins, and chickpeas germinated in the dark—and wildflowers, following an ancient devotional ritual that accompanies the local Nardò dialect prayers.
Rich in Baroque palaces and featuring one of the most evocative historic centers in Salento, Nardò preserves one of the most authentic expressions of Salento's popular religiosity during its Holy Week. The Procession of the Mysteries combines faith, music, and identity, attracting citizens, devotees, and visitors interested in the great Easter traditions of Southern Italy every year.
The 2026 edition of the Procession of the Mysteries was held on Friday, April 3rd, Good Friday. In the early afternoon, the Rite of the Agony took place with the meditation on the Seven Last Words of Christ, followed at 3:30 PM by the solemn Passion of the Lord liturgy at the Cathedral Basilica of Maria SS. Assunta in Nardò.
In the evening, the statues of the Dead Christ and Our Lady of Sorrows crossed the historic center, carried on shoulders by the confraternities and accompanied by the Banda Verde and the choir with the Hymn to the Dead Christ. The city procession, included in the diocesan calendar along with that of Gallipoli, concluded in Nardò around 10:00 PM under the guidance of the Bishop of the Diocese of Nardò-Gallipoli, Mons. Fernando Filograna. Holy Week 2026 opened on Tuesday, March 31st, with the Chrism Mass in the Cathedral.
