The patronal feast of Ascoli Satriano, May 1st
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
In the village of Ascoli Satriano, in the Province of Foggia, in the heart of the Apulian Daunia, May 1st is the most anticipated day of the religious year. It is the day when the community gathers around the Madonna della Misericordia, the city's patron saint, in a celebration that weaves together popular devotion, historical memory, and tradition.
At the heart of the celebration is a precious Byzantine icon dating back to the 13th century, painted on a chestnut wood panel, depicting the Virgin seated with the Child in her arms. The 1954 restoration brought to light the crimson drapery and typical Byzantine lines, while a further intervention carried out in Trani in 2010 restored its original splendor. The image was crowned with a golden diadem on May 29, 1930.
On the day of the feast, the icon leaves the Chiesa del Soccorso (also known as the Church of the Misericordia), its historic home, and is carried in a solemn procession through the streets of the center to the Cathedral. Here, the sacred image remains exposed to the veneration of the faithful throughout the summer, until the first Sunday of September, when it returns to its original church for the festivities linked to San Potito. It is a rite that has marked the city's spiritual calendar for generations.
The cult of the Madonna della Misericordia was introduced to Ascoli Satriano by the Augustinian Hermit monks, who inhabited the convent adjacent to the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso until the suppression of religious orders. The Virgin was proclaimed Patroness of Ascoli on April 1, 1898: since then, her feast has represented one of the strongest identity moments for the entire community, capable of drawing many emigrants and descendants back to their roots.
Surrounding the liturgical moment is the festive and popular dimension typical of Southern Italian patronal feasts: the firecrackers that announce the day at dawn, the marches performed by the brass band in the squares, the illuminations, and, at the end of the procession, the fireworks display in the evocative medieval site known as "Pozzello". A celebration that unites faith, music, and community under the Apulian sky.
The 2026 edition of the Madonna della Misericordia feast in Ascoli Satriano does not yet have an official program published. The celebration traditionally follows the May 1st recurrence, with the solemn procession of the Byzantine icon from the Chiesa del Soccorso to the Cathedral, where the image remains on display until the first Sunday of September.
As soon as the parish and the Diocese of Cerignola-Ascoli Satriano release the definitive dates and times, we will update this page with the complete program of the festivities.
Ascoli Satriano (FG), Puglia. The procession departs from the Church of Santa Maria del Soccorso (della Misericordia) and reaches the Cathedral crossing the historic center; fireworks are set off in the area known as "Pozzello".
Traditionally on May 1st of each year, with the icon remaining in the Cathedral until the first Sunday of September.
Ascoli Satriano can be reached by car from the Candela motorway exit (A16) or from Foggia along the SS90 road. The most useful train station is Foggia, a main hub of the Tavoliere, from where you can continue by bus or car.
As this is a free religious celebration, we recommend wearing appropriate attire for church services and checking with the parish or the Municipality for updated schedules.
