About Madonna del Carmine

Every July 16th, Vallata, a village in Upper Irpinia in the province of Avellino, renews its devotion to the Madonna del Carmine with a procession winding through the town streets. The ritual centers on the 17th-century chapel on Via Madonna del Carmine, bringing together confraternities, the faithful, and emigrant families returning for the summer. It is one of the most heartfelt religious festivals in the local calendar, alongside the feast of Saint Vitus in June and the patron saint, Saint Bartholomew, in late August.

A devotion rooted in Upper Irpinia

The Procession of the Madonna del Carmine, also known as Our Lady of Mount Carmel, is one of the most anticipated religious events of the summer in Vallata, a town of just over three thousand inhabitants in the province of Avellino, in Upper Irpinia, Campania. Every July 16th, the community gathers around the image of the Virgin and accompanies it along the town streets in a procession that blends prayer, song, and family memory.

As in many towns in the Campanian Apennines, the festival is more than just a liturgical rite: it is the moment when the village reunites. Families who emigrated to Northern Italy, Europe, and the United States—Vallata has a historic community in Elizabeth, New Jersey—often plan their summer return during these days, between the feast of Saint Vitus in June and that of the patron saint, Saint Bartholomew, in late August.

The Carmine Chapel, from the 17th century to today

The heart of the devotion is the small Chapel of the Madonna del Carmine, built at the beginning of the 17th century by the Dattilo family outside the village walls, in a locality then called "L'arenaria," now Via Madonna del Carmine. A notarial deed from 1635 established its perpetual ownership to the same family.

The building, expanded several times over the centuries, now has a hut-like shape with a single nave and a barrel-vaulted ceiling. It has undergone various restoration projects, the last of which was carried out with funds allocated after the 1980 Irpinia earthquake, which severely struck the entire Ufita Valley area.

A date that has changed over time

July 16th corresponds to the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, but in Vallata, the festival has not always taken place on this day. A 1928 poster preserved in local archives attests to a celebration fixed as late as August 29th. It is only since the post-war period that the July 16th date has been consistently observed.

Ex-votos, gifts, and festival masters

Local sources preserve the memory of the offerings with which the faithful expressed their gratitude to the Virgin:

  • sacred furnishings and vestments destined for the chapel;
  • metal ex-votos depicting arms, hands, fingers, and legs;
  • earrings, rings, and necklaces in gold, silver, and coral;
  • foodstuffs collected house-to-house by the so-called maestri di festa (festival masters), who were in charge of the organization.

This community collection, widespread throughout Irpinia, was the way a farming village financed its own festival: a collective gesture that still survives today in updated forms.

The Vallata festival calendar

The Madonna del Carmine is part of a particularly rich devotional calendar that marks the entire year in Vallata:

  • January 17th, Saint Anthony the Abbot;
  • Holy Week, with the ancient Passion processions on Holy Thursday and Good Friday, among the most characteristic in the region;
  • Last Saturday of May, pilgrimage to the Madonna della Mattinella, with the walk to the sanctuary in the territory of Andretta;
  • June 13th-15th, Saint Anthony of Padua and Saint Vitus, with the Procession of the Panelle;
  • July 16th, Madonna del Carmine;
  • August 16th, Saint Roch, and August 24th, Saint Bartholomew the Apostle, patron saint of the town;
  • September 12th, Saint Mary, and December 13th, Saint Lucy.

Vallata, a village in the Ufita Valley

Situated at an altitude of about 870 meters and just over 60 kilometers from Avellino, Vallata overlooks the Ufita Valley. The town preserves the Church of Saint Bartholomew, Palazzo Gallicchio, the villa of the ancient castle, and the Saint Roch viewpoint. Local cuisine features Caciocavallo Silano PDO cheese, homemade pasta with hen sauce, and lamb dishes: flavors that accompany the return of emigrants during the summer.

Why attend

The procession is open to everyone and takes place along the streets of the town. It is not an event built for tourism: those who arrive from outside will find an authentic village festival, made of Marian hymns, decorated windows, and familiar faces. The independent portal vallata.org, with photo galleries and videos curated by Giovanni Nufrio, documents its unfolding year after year and is today a precious archive of community memory.

The procession of July 16th, 2026

In 2026, the community of Vallata, in the province of Avellino, renewed its appointment with the Madonna del Carmine. The celebration fell on a Thursday, the exact day of the liturgical memorial of the Blessed Virgin Mary of Mount Carmel, according to the custom established in the town since the post-war period.

The procession traveled through the streets of the town, accompanied by the faithful and by Vallata families who had returned for the summer. As every year, the festival was part of the town's dense devotional calendar, between the celebrations of Saint Vitus in June and those of the patron saint, Saint Bartholomew, in late August.

Documentation of the edition

The independent portal vallata.org dedicated a page to the 2026 edition featuring twenty-five photographs and a video, curated by Giovanni Nufrio. This is the most complete source available online for this festival, which does not have its own official website: a visual archive that has built a continuous memory of the procession over the years.

Programme Madonna del Carmine 2026

The detailed program of the festivities was not released online: as is customary in the towns of Upper Irpinia, the times of the masses and the procession were announced via posters displayed in town and through parish notices. The focus of the day remained the July 16th procession along the streets of Vallata, linked to the Madonna del Carmine chapel.
