About Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Borgo

Every year, around July 16th, the Borgo district of Rome celebrates Our Lady of Mount Carmel. From the church of Santa Maria in Traspontina, entrusted to the Carmelite Fathers since 1484, the venerated statue of the Virgin is carried in procession a few days before the feast, winding through the streets of the district and Via della Conciliazione, with a stop in front of the Sant'Anna gate in the Vatican. It is the defining feast for the 'Borghiciani', blending Marian devotion, solemn vespers, and the July 16th Mass just steps from St. Peter's.

The Marian feast of the Borgo district

The Procession of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is the most cherished devotional event in the Borgo district, the Roman neighborhood nestled between Castel Sant'Angelo and Vatican City. Every year, around the liturgical feast of July 16th, the community gathers at the church of Santa Maria in Traspontina on Via della Conciliazione to honor the Virgin of Carmel with solemn celebrations and the traditional procession of the statue through the neighborhood streets.

Eight centuries of Carmelite devotion

The church of Santa Maria in Traspontina has been entrusted to the Carmelite Fathers since 1484. The current building was begun in 1566 and solemnly consecrated by Benedict XIII in 1728. Inside, a precious statue of Our Lady of Mount Carmel is venerated, depicting her holding the Child Jesus while offering the scapular; completed in 1922, it was blessed by Pius XI and crowned by Bishop Luigi Pellizzi on July 15, 1928, and later crowned again by John Paul II on September 12, 2001, to mark the 750th anniversary of the gift of the scapular. This devotion is rooted in the Carmelite tradition, which commemorates the Virgin's apparition to Saint Simon Stock on July 16, 1251.

The procession between Borgo and Via della Conciliazione

A few days before the feast, the statue of the Madonna leaves the church and is carried in procession along the streets of the Borgo district and Via della Conciliazione. The cortege, accompanied by Carmelite friars, nuns, confraternities, and many faithful, stops before the entrance of Sant'Anna in the Vatican before returning to the church. It is a moment of strong popular identity: many 'Borghiciani' and 'Prataroli'โ€”the historic inhabitants of Borgo and Prati who have moved away over the yearsโ€”return for the occasion, united by their bond with the district's Madonna.

A rite in the heart of Rome

The feast combines liturgy with Roman popular tradition: solemn vespers, the Holy Mass of July 16th, the supplication to Our Lady of Mount Carmel, the imposition of the scapular, and, during the festivities, convivial moments for the community. Celebrating Our Lady of Mount Carmel in Borgo means experiencing one of the most characteristic Marian feasts in the Capital, just a stone's throw from St. Peter's Basilica.

Municipality and territory

The event takes place in Rome, in the Borgo district, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region. The church of Santa Maria in Traspontina, seat of the Carmelite parish, serves as its spiritual and organizational heart.
