A traditional village carnival in the heart of Upper Cilento
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
As the calendar turns to the carnival season, the small town of Prignano Cilento, in the province of Salerno, prepares for its Mask Festival. Local Cilento press describes it as a historic event that «unites folklore, identity, and popular participation,» placing it every year within the busy carnival calendar of the Cilento and Vallo di Diano areas. It is not an event built for the masses; it is the celebration of a community of just over a thousand inhabitants who, for a day, dress up and reconnect with their own customs.
The town, perched at an altitude of about 415 meters among the hills of Upper Cilento, becomes the natural stage for the festivities. Homemade costumes, improvised masks, confetti, music, and plenty of children: the Mask Festival belongs to that family of village carnivals where joy does not need large floats to be contagious.
The Prignano festival is part of a specific cultural context. The Cilento carnival is one of the most vibrant in Campania: just a few kilometers away, the Maschkarata of San Mauro Cilento and the Carnuluvaro of Montecorice and Cosentini have been inscribed in the Inventory of Intangible Cultural Heritage of Campania, a testament to how deeply rooted these popular performances—featuring the devil, the priest, the hunter, Pulcinella, and the Zite—are in the territory.
During the same period, the Cilento calendar is enriched with diverse events: the grand parades of Agropoli and Capaccio Paestum, the Gulf of Policastro Carnival, the Sala Consilina Carnival, and the Cilento Float Festival in Casal Velino, which traditionally closes the season. The Prignano Mask Festival represents the most intimate and authentic soul of this mosaic.
With just over 1,100 inhabitants and a territory of only twelve square kilometers, Prignano Cilento is one of the smallest municipalities in Upper Cilento, located within the Cilento, Vallo di Diano and Alburni National Park. It includes the hamlets of Melito and San Giuliano and preserves a significant historical heritage: the mother church of San Nicola di Bari, dating back to before the 13th century, the Cardone marquis palace with its characteristic cylindrical tower, and the chapel of Sant'Antonio da Padova, which is all that remains of the ancient Augustinian convent.
Just below the town lies the Alento River Oasis, a protected area created around the reservoir completed in 1994, now a destination for hiking, birdwatching, and educational activities. The village is also known for another unique tradition, the Opera dei Turchi, a popular performance dedicated to the miracles of Saint Nicholas, which takes place in the main square on Easter Monday, featuring an angel lowered from the church bell tower by a pulley.
Like all carnivals, the Mask Festival is held in the weeks leading up to Lent, typically between February and early March. In 2026, the Cilento carnival calendar extended until February 22nd, but the exact date for the Prignano Cilento festival was not released on the information channels consulted. It is therefore advisable to check with the Municipality or the social media channels of local associations, which usually announce it a few days in advance.
The 2026 carnival brought color to the squares of the Cilento, Vallo di Diano, and Piana del Sele regions, with a busy calendar of events that accompanied communities until February 22nd. Among these, the local press noted the return of the Mask Festival to Prignano Cilento, defined as a historic event that unites folklore, identity, and popular participation.
The sources consulted do not report the exact date or the detailed program of the 2026 edition: as often happens with carnivals in the smaller villages of the province of Salerno, the announcement is made close to the event via posters displayed in the town and the social media profiles of local associations. Those wishing to participate can contact the Municipality of Prignano Cilento or follow the Cilento information portals, which update the carnival calendar in the weeks leading up to Lent.
By car: From the A2 «del Mediterraneo» motorway, take the Battipaglia exit, then follow the SS 18 Tirrena Inferiore towards Agropoli and local roads towards Prignano Cilento (the village is about fifteen kilometers from the coast).
By train: Agropoli-Castellabate station on the Salerno–Reggio Calabria line, then bus or taxi to the inland area.
By plane: Salerno-Costa d'Amalfi Airport (Pontecagnano) and Naples-Capodichino Airport.
