The Ligurian Vermentino wine competition in the village of Diano Castello
Premio Vermentino is one of the longest-running wine events in Liguria. It takes place in Diano Castello, a hilltop village in the Gulf of Diano, in the province of Imperia, a land with an ancient winemaking tradition. The competition is dedicated to Vermentino, the symbolic grape of Ligurian white wine, and each year attracts wide participation from wineries across the region.
The competition involves a selection phase for the samples, with tasting panels evaluating the wines in contention and identifying the best ones, followed by a public awards evening accompanied by tastings of the selected Vermentinos. In recent years, participation has exceeded one hundred labels, confirming the prestige achieved by the event.
Premio Vermentino is deeply linked to the identity of Diano Castello, which still preserves traces of its agricultural vocation and a network of historic wineries. The event is part of the village's rich summer calendar and dialogues with other major events in the Gulf of Diano, starting with the Aromatica festival. For those who love wine and the authentic villages of the Western Ligurian Riviera, it is an opportunity to discover a territory and a grape variety that tell its story.
The 33rd Premio Vermentino has already been previewed during Aromatica 2026 in Diano Marina. The competition begins in June with the selection of samples: two tasting panels evaluate the competing wines and identify the dozens of labels that advance to the final evaluation. The final jury is led by Paolo Massobrio, a leading figure in Italian food and wine journalism.
The awards ceremony, with public tastings of all selected Vermentinos, is expected in mid-July in the historic center of Diano Castello. The precise dates will be announced by the organizers in the weeks prior.
Detailed dates and times are being finalized.
Diano Castello is a few minutes from Diano Marina, reachable by car from the Imperia Est exit of the A10 motorway. During the event, shuttle buses are usually provided from the coast to the village. Parking is limited in the historic center.
The competition traditionally takes place in July. The precise dates and details of the public tastings for the 2026 edition will be announced on the official website and by the Municipality of Diano Castello.
