Float parades, roving masks, and local festivities in the village of Prata Sannita
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
Every year, between February and March, the Prata Sannita Carnival transforms the streets of Prata Sannita, a small town in the Alto Casertano area of Campania, into a vibrant procession of color, music, and imagination. It is a community festival in the most authentic sense: born from the local spirit, it brings families together and fills the historic center with energy throughout the day, from the afternoon children's activities to the grand finale in the main square.
The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Prata Sannita, which includes the Carnival in a calendar of events designed to engage everyone, with free and open access to all festivities.
The heart of the event is the allegorical float parade, which has returned to center stage alongside the so-called roving masks: groups in costume that move along the route, enlivening every corner of the village. The procession travels through the main streets of Prata Sannita and reaches Piazza San Pancrazio, named after the patron saint, where the day concludes with music, awards, and entertainment for all.
The afternoon is primarily dedicated to children, with activities and entertainment preceding the main parade. This is one of the aspects that makes the Prata Sannita Carnival a truly family-friendly event: children's costumes mingle with organized groups and the floats prepared in the preceding weeks, and participation remains accessible to everyone as no tickets are required.
Prata Sannita has just over 1,400 inhabitants and sits at an altitude of about 360 meters in the province of Caserta, bordering mountain towns like Gallo Matese, Letino, and Valle Agricola. Its medieval village, dominated by the castle, is the town's most recognizable feature and provides a natural backdrop for the parade: the narrow streets and small squares amplify the music and voices, giving the festival an intimate character that large city carnivals cannot replicate.
In this context, the Carnival is more than just a festive break. It is an opportunity for those who live in the town year-round and those returning from nearby cities to reconnect, a tangible way to keep alive the heritage of popular festivals that have always marked the calendar of inland communities in Campania.
As of the writing of this guide, the Municipality of Prata Sannita has not yet published the date or program for the 2026 edition of the Prata Sannita Carnival. The last documented edition was held on Tuesday, March 4, 2025, which enlivened the town center with a rich series of events for all ages. Since Carnival is a movable feast that changes dates each year based on the liturgical calendar, it is advisable to check for updates on the official municipal channels before traveling.
Those looking for an authentic Carnival, far from the massive crowds of Venice or Viareggio, will find a genuine, family-oriented atmosphere here: floats built to fit the village scale, masks wandering through alleys, children in costume, and a square that stays lively until evening. A simple, free, and truly genuine experience, perfect to combine with a stroll through the medieval village and a taste of the local Alto Casertano cuisine.
For the 2026 edition of the Prata Sannita Carnival, there are currently no official announcements from the Municipality of Prata Sannita: the events page of the municipal website does not yet list a date or a detailed program. For this reason, the date indicated on this sheet is purely indicative and should be considered subject to confirmation.
What can reasonably be expected is the established structure of the festival: an afternoon dedicated to children with animation and entertainment, the parade of masks and allegorical floats along the main streets of the town, and the conclusion in Piazza San Pancrazio, with costumed groups and awards. Participation, as in previous editions, is expected to remain free.
To ensure you have the correct date, we advise consulting the events page of the Municipality of Prata Sannita or contacting the town hall directly in the weeks leading up to the Carnival.
The parade travels through the main streets of Prata Sannita (CE) and concludes in Piazza San Pancrazio, in the town center.
Prata Sannita can be reached by car: the town is located in the Alto Casertano area, in the province of Caserta, a short distance from the Matese municipalities. During the parade, some streets in the center may be closed to traffic: it is advisable to park on the outskirts of the town and continue on foot.
Access to the event is free, with no tickets or reservations required.
