Herds, breeders, and markets in the heart of the Biella region
The Pralungo Livestock Gathering is one of the most cherished events in the Biella spring calendar. Every year, on the April 25th holiday, the small town of Pralungo, nestled at the foot of the mountains surrounding the Sanctuary of Oropa in the Province of Biella (Piedmont), transforms into a large open-air gathering dedicated to the world of livestock farming and peasant traditions. The event attracts breeders, exhibitors, and curious visitors from across the valley and neighboring towns, in a day that weaves together agricultural work, conviviality, and local identity.
The heart of the event is the animals: each edition brings about two hundred head of cattle, nearly a hundred goats and sheep, and a few horses to the village. The herds parade and gather in the area of the multi-purpose hall, offering the public the chance to observe the breeds raised in the Biella mountains up close and to learn about the daily work of those who keep pastoralism alive in this mid-mountain territory.
Alongside the herds, the area comes alive with local craft markets and stalls featuring food vendors and clothing, accompanying visitors throughout the morning. It is the ideal opportunity to discover local products and experience the authentic atmosphere of a village festival—simple and genuine.
After a hiatus of about twenty years, the gathering has returned to Pralungo thanks to the commitment of the Associazione I giou marghè 3.0, which organizes the event in collaboration with the Pralungo Alpini group and with the patronage of the Municipality. This result was made possible by the support of the municipal administration, the volunteers present throughout the day, and friends of the Pralungo Valley. Today, the Livestock Gathering is an event that unites generations and renews the village's bond with its peasant and mountain roots.
The 2026 edition, the 21st of the event, brought approximately 200 head of cattle, just under a hundred goats and sheep, and some horses to Pralungo. The day opened at 9:30 AM with the gathering of the herds and the opening of the local craft markets, which were lively throughout the morning. In the early afternoon, the award ceremony for the breeders took place, a central moment that celebrated the work of the local livestock sector, followed by a convivial lunch. The event was organized by the Associazione I giou marghè 3.0 with the Pralungo Alpini group and the patronage of the Municipality.
