Theatre and classical culture between the Luni Amphitheatre and the Ligurian Sea
The Portus Lunae Art Festival is the theatrical and cultural review centred on the Roman Amphitheatre of Luni, in the province of La Spezia, at the site of the ancient Roman colony of Luna. Directed by Sergio Maifredi for Teatro Pubblico Ligure, it is a "distributed" festival that intertwines archaeology, theatre, and myth.
In addition to the amphitheatre of Luni, the review involves other symbolic locations in the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, such as Portovenere and the Sarzanello Fortress. Performances, conference-shows, and readings are held in settings of extraordinary charm, creating a dialogue between historical heritage and the contemporary stage.
The programme alternates lessons in ancient Greek, philosophical performances, readings, and great classical tragedies, often in their national premiere, with prominent performers. A cultured and evocative festival that enhances the territory's classical heritage, bringing theatre to the places of memory in Lunigiana and the Gulf of Poets.
The 2026 edition of the Portus Lunae Art Festival opens on June 26 with a guided tour and the conference-show "Greek in Your Pocket", accompanied by the event "The Mediterranean by Boat". The review then continues until August as a distributed festival.
The main performances are held at the Roman Amphitheatre of Luni (July 9 and 17) and in other locations in the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, including Portovenere and the Sarzanello Fortress (August 2). Artistic direction by Sergio Maifredi for Teatro Pubblico Ligure.
