About Portus Lunae Art Festival

Amidst the ruins of ancient Luna and the most evocative locations of the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, the Portus Lunae Art Festival stages theatre, myth, and classical culture. Directed by Sergio Maifredi for Teatro Pubblico Ligure, it is a distributed festival that engages with the Roman Amphitheatre of Luni, Portovenere, and the Sarzanello Fortress, featuring lessons in ancient Greek, philosophy on stage, and great tragedies.

Theatre returns to ancient Luna

The Portus Lunae Art Festival is the theatrical and cultural review centred on the Roman Amphitheatre of Luni, in the province of La Spezia, at the site of the ancient Roman colony of Luna. Directed by Sergio Maifredi for Teatro Pubblico Ligure, it is a "distributed" festival that intertwines archaeology, theatre, and myth.

A distributed festival

In addition to the amphitheatre of Luni, the review involves other symbolic locations in the Eastern Ligurian Riviera, such as Portovenere and the Sarzanello Fortress. Performances, conference-shows, and readings are held in settings of extraordinary charm, creating a dialogue between historical heritage and the contemporary stage.

Myth, philosophy, and tragedy

The programme alternates lessons in ancient Greek, philosophical performances, readings, and great classical tragedies, often in their national premiere, with prominent performers. A cultured and evocative festival that enhances the territory's classical heritage, bringing theatre to the places of memory in Lunigiana and the Gulf of Poets.
