The grand gathering of Italian folklore on the Otranto seafront
This edition has not been confirmed by the organiser to date. We recommend checking before going.
The Popular Music Festival is a grand celebration of folklore that brings the Lungomare degli Eroi in Otranto to life, in the heart of Salento, in the province of Lecce. The event coincides with the National Gathering of Folk Groups promoted by the Italian Federation of Popular Traditions (FITP) in collaboration with the Municipality of Otranto and the Pro Loco Idruntina, under the patronage of the Ministry of Culture, the Puglia Region, and the Province of Lecce. For a few days, Italy's easternmost city becomes the capital of folklore, bringing together costumed groups from every corner of the peninsula.
The common thread of the festival is the dialogue between different regional traditions: from the Salento of pizzica and tarantella to Alpine dances, from Sardinian songs to the costumes of the South, each group showcases the richness of its own identity, expressed through music, dance, historical attire, dialects, and flavors. The public can enjoy costumed parades, performances on the stage set up along the sea, and processions that wind through the historic center of Otranto, a UNESCO World Heritage site. Local stars include I Tamburellisti di Otranto, who host workshops dedicated to Salento folk music and the crafting of traditional instruments.
Alongside the music, the festival offers moments of conviviality such as the Cuochi in Piazza gastronomic competition, which pits traditional dishes from different Italian communities against each other, and an exhibition dedicated to traditional clothing hosted in the city's historic venues. There are also guided tours of the old town and religious observances linked to the local community, creating a blend of culture, popular spirituality, and hospitality.
Considered the most representative event of the FITP, the Popular Music Festival of Otranto is a unique opportunity to experience the variety of Italian popular traditions in one place, with the enchanting Adriatic Sea as a backdrop. It is an experience that unites tourists and residents in a spirit of shared memory, dance, and celebration.
The Popular Music Festival of Otranto is expected to return in 2026, likely in September on the Lungomare degli Eroi. At the moment, the dates for the 2026 edition have not yet been announced and the program is not available. This page will be updated with dates, participating groups, and details as soon as the organizers publish the official information.
The main events take place on the Lungomare degli Eroi in Otranto (LE), with side events in the historic center and the Cathedral.
Otranto can be reached by car via the SS16; the reference railway stations are those of the Ferrovie del Sud Est. In summer, the historic center has restricted traffic: it is recommended to use the external parking lots and continue on foot.
Performances and parades on the seafront are free and held outdoors.
