Two days of global cultures, music, and flavors in San Cesario di Lecce
Popoli in Festa is a two-day event that transforms San Cesario di Lecce, a small town in the province of Lecce, Puglia, into an authentic global village. The event stems from a significant and precious reality: 42 different nationalities live within the municipality, with Albanian, Senegalese, Romanian, Moroccan, Chinese, Nigerian, Georgian, and Polish communities being among the largest. This human richness shapes a celebration of encounter, summarized by the motto "Many cultures, one peace."
The beating heart of the event is "Il Mondo in Tavola" (The World at the Table), a gastronomic journey where local foreign communities prepare and offer traditional dishes from their home countries. Strolling through the stalls in Largo Amedeo Forcignanò, you can travel the world by tasting authentic flavors in an experience that blends conviviality with mutual understanding.
The evenings are brought to life by live music: the program features Mediterranean and Balkan sounds from the Gambling Band, blending Salento pizzica with Eastern rhythms, and a concert by the Orchestra Popolare di Via Leuca. There are also Afro dance workshops accompanied by live percussion, involving both adults and children in a participatory, communal experience.
Alongside the festivities, Popoli in Festa offers moments for reflection and culture: photographic exhibitions like "Un Giorno in Più", art displays, film screenings, forums, and testimonials on themes of migration and inclusion. The spiritual dimension is represented by the Eucharistic celebration in the Zairean rite of the Congolese tradition and a meditation workshop for global peace, highlighting the interreligious and communal soul of the event.
Ample space is dedicated to families and children, with workshops and playful activities designed for the little ones, while youth soccer and volleyball tournaments take place in the days leading up to the event. Promoted by the Sant'Antonio da Padova Parish together with the Missionary Center and the Migrantes Office of the Diocese of Lecce, the Pro Loco I Tre Casali, and the TempoPresente APS association, with the patronage of the Province of Lecce, the event offers free admission.
The second edition of Popoli in Festa was held on Saturday, May 30, and Sunday, May 31, 2026, in San Cesario di Lecce, once again under the patronage of the Province of Lecce. On Saturday, the program alternated between intercultural workshops, Afro dance with live percussion, cinema, the opening of photographic and art exhibitions, and institutional testimonials, before heating up in the evening with "Il Mondo in Tavola" and the concert by the Gambling Band. Sunday featured a meditation workshop for global peace, visits to Casa Saponaro, the Eucharistic celebration in the Zairean rite, and, as a grand finale, the concert by the Orchestra Popolare di Via Leuca.
