The High Recognition for Mediterranean excellence in Porto Cesareo
The Virtù e Conoscenza Festival is one of the most iconic cultural events in Salento. Promoted by the MediterraneaMente Social Promotion Association in partnership with the Municipality of Porto Cesareo (Lecce, Puglia), the festival centers around the High Recognition, an award bestowed annually upon individuals who have excelled in science, culture, business, sports, art, and civic engagement, with a special focus on the roots and values of the Mediterranean basin.
The award's title is inspired by the famous verses of Dante's Divine Comedy, in which Ulysses urges his companions not to live "like brutes," but to pursue "virtue and knowledge" (virtute e canoscenza). Recipients are presented with a reproduction of a statuette of the god Thoth, the Egyptian deity of science and wisdom, which was found in the waters of Porto Cesareo in 1932 and is now housed at the National Archaeological Museum of Taranto (MArTA). It is a symbol that ties the territory to its millennial history as a Mediterranean crossroads.
Beyond the awards ceremony, the festival offers a comprehensive program that highlights Porto Cesareo and its extraordinary natural heritage: exhibitions, book presentations, conferences, museum visits, and excursions within the regional natural park and the Marine Protected Area, alongside music and sports events. The festival promotes peace, the appreciation of diversity, intercultural integration, interreligious dialogue, gender equality, and environmental protection.
Over the years, the High Recognition has been awarded to prominent figures from the worlds of culture, science, and entertainment. The artistic direction of recent editions has been entrusted to Lele Spedicato, co-founder and guitarist of the band Negramaro, who also supports the festival through the associated Sasinae International Song Contest, dedicated to young singer-songwriters. Nominations are evaluated by a Selection Jury chaired by the Mayor of Porto Cesareo and a Technical-Scientific Jury.
Overlooking the Ionian Sea, Porto Cesareo is one of Salento's most beloved seaside destinations, famous for its crystal-clear waters and its Marine Protected Area. The Virtù e Conoscenza Festival offers the perfect opportunity to discover this corner of Puglia, blending a beach holiday with high-profile cultural encounters—a combination that has become a highly anticipated fixture of the Salento summer.
The tenth edition of the Virtù e Conoscenza Festival, promoted by the MediterraneaMente Association in agreement with the Municipality of Porto Cesareo and the University of Salento, celebrates an important milestone. The gala ceremony is scheduled for Saturday, December 5, 2026, at the Congress Center of the Ecotekne Campus of the University of Salento, in Lecce.
The artistic direction is entrusted to Lele Spedicato, guitarist of Negramaro.
