The parade of allegorical floats in the medieval heart of Lunigiana
In the heart of Lunigiana, at the northernmost tip of Tuscany in the Province of Massa-Carrara, the medieval village of Pontremoli hosts one of the most beloved winter festivals every year: the Pontremoli Carnival. For an afternoon, the cobblestone streets, small squares, and ancient bridges of this town nestled between the Apennines and the Apuan Alps transform into a grand open-air stage, invaded by confetti, masks, and allegorical floats.
The heart of the event is the parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups, which bring the historic center to life every year with colorful creations, elaborate costumes, and plenty of cheer. The procession sets off from Piazza Italia and travels through the streets of the village, with stops along the way, until it reaches Piazza della Repubblica, where the party continues with music and fun. Along the route, local merchants offer snacks to participants in the spirit of sharing typical of community festivals.
The Pontremoli Carnival is, above all, a festival designed for families and children. Once they arrive in Piazza della Repubblica, the little ones can enjoy games and dedicated entertainment, while the village fills with laughter, costumes, and seasonal treats. It is the perfect opportunity to discover the authentic atmosphere of a town that has kept its medieval charm intact.
Participating in the Carnival is also a great way to visit Pontremoli, one of the most evocative locations in Lunigiana. The town is known for the Castello del Piagnaro, which houses the famous Statue Stele Museum, for its Baroque palaces, and for its long tradition linked to books, celebrated every summer by the Premio Bancarella. The carnival festival, organized by the Pro Loco of Pontremoli together with the Municipality of Pontremoli, is part of the rich calendar of Lunigiana carnivals, which animate many villages in the area during this time of year with parades, bonfires, and masquerade parties.
The 2026 Pontremoli Carnival was held on Saturday, February 14 in the historic center of the village, in the Province of Massa-Carrara. The parade of allegorical floats and costumed groups departed from Piazza Italia at 2:30 PM, traveling through the city streets with stops along the route, including Via Manfredo Giuliani and Piazzetta del Bambarone.
The procession concluded in Piazza della Repubblica, where games and entertainment for children took place starting at 4:00 PM, while local merchants offered a snack to all participants. The free event was organized by the Pro Loco of Pontremoli in collaboration with the Municipality of Pontremoli and was part of the calendar of Lunigiana carnivals.
