A Christmas that spreads beyond the main square

Pontecagnano in Christmas is the festive program for the holiday season in the Municipality of Pontecagnano Faiano, located in the province of Salerno, Campania. The local administration has chosen a unique approach: rather than concentrating everything in a single village, they have opted for a widespread project. Illuminations, entertainment, shows, and markets are distributed throughout the municipal territory, from the town center to the surrounding hamlets, ensuring every neighborhood gets to celebrate.

The Christmas trail reaches Sant'Antonio, Picciola, Magazzeno, Pagliarone, and Faiano. This choice is intentional, as it avoids overcrowding the main urban core and brings the festive atmosphere to the peripheral areas. It is a model that has solidified over recent years, summarized perfectly by the organizers: don't just call them lights.

The tree lighting in Piazza Sabbato

The inaugural moment is traditionally the lighting of the Christmas tree and illuminations in Piazza Sabbato, held in the late afternoon during the first days of December, just before the Immaculate Conception long weekend. It is the most popular event of the entire program: the square fills with families, the countdown is accompanied by a choral performance, and from that moment on, the city remains illuminated until Epiphany and beyond.

On the same evening, or shortly thereafter, the Immaculate Conception markets are inaugurated, which in previous years have been hosted in Piazzetta Isonzo and the Gardens of Piazza Sabbato.

Markets, crafts, and local products

The commercial heart of the event consists of wooden huts set up among the greenery of the gardens, illuminated and arranged along small pedestrian paths. The selection follows the classic model of Italian Christmas markets:

• Local crafts and handmade creations, with a special focus on products from Campania;
• Traditional products and festive sweets, available for purchase or tasting on-site;
• Gift ideas, Christmas decorations, and ornaments;
• Food stalls with hot drinks to enjoy while strolling in the evening.

Promoting Campanian craftsmanship and supporting local commerce are explicitly stated as key objectives of the project by the municipal administration, alongside strengthening the sense of community.

For children and families

A large part of the program is designed for the little ones. Recent editions have included Santa's House, where children can drop off their letters, and a Christmas train that travels through the city streets. These are complemented by performances from street artists who move throughout the municipal area, along with entertainment, music, and shows scheduled throughout the holiday period.

Admission is free for all initiatives: a choice upheld by the organizers, who present Christmas as a service to the city before it is a tourist attraction.

An urban renewal project

Beyond the festive dimension, Pontecagnano in Christmas is presented by the Municipality as an urban renewal operation: lighting up and enlivening squares and hamlets means bringing people back to public spaces during the months they are less frequented, giving visibility to local businesses, and positioning Pontecagnano Faiano as a destination even outside the summer season.

Where it takes place

Pontecagnano Faiano is located in the Sele plain, a few kilometers from Salerno, in a convenient position for those arriving from the provincial capital or traveling from the plain toward the Amalfi Coast. The hub of the event remains Piazza Sabbato with its gardens, but we recommend exploring further: the true essence of the project lies in the trail, and the hamlets offer their own unique decorations and events.
