About Pompei Christmas Markets

Every December, the historic center of Pompei transforms into a festive village. In Piazza Bartolo Longo, the grand square facing the Sanctuary, wooden chalets host the Christmas Markets, offering local crafts, nativity art, sweets, and typical Campanian products. Surrounded by the illuminations of Via Sacra and Via Lepanto, the tree lighting on December 8th, and traveling entertainment for children, the city welcomes families and visitors through to Epiphany with evening strolls, tastings, and gift ideas. Admission is free.

Christmas in the heart of Pompei

In the town of Pompei, in the province of Naples, the Advent season has a clear focal point: Piazza Bartolo Longo, the large square that opens up in front of the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary. This is where the wooden chalets of the Christmas Markets are set up—over twenty stalls, sometimes reaching twenty-eight in past years—turning the city's living room into a charming festive village. The format is the classic Campanian market style: free admission, a leisurely stroll among the lights, last-minute shopping, and delicious stops along the way.

Crafts, nativity art, and the flavors of Campania

The market is dedicated primarily to Campanian Christmas traditions, starting with the art of the nativity scene, which in this part of the region is not just an ornament but a true craft. In documented editions, the chalets have hosted:

  • Nativity-inspired objects and figurines, decorations, and tree ornaments;
  • Neapolitan pastries and artisanal chocolate specialties, with live demonstrations that are a hit with children;
  • Typical Southern products: cured meats and cheeses, honey, figs, licorice, taralli, and preserves;
  • Costume jewelry, giftware, and small crafts, perfect for last-minute gifts.

The characteristic wooden chalets were previously provided by Tanagro Legno Idea, with the involvement of the CLAAI of Salerno, the union of artisans and small businesses in the province—a detail that explains the strong presence of local producers and artisans among the exhibitors.

The city that lights up

The market does not exist in isolation; it is part of a Christmas calendar that involves the entire city. On December 8, 2025, at 6:00 PM, the lighting of the grand tree in Piazza Bartolo Longo officially kicked off the festivities before a square packed with families, children, and teenagers. That same evening, the illuminations of Via Sacra, Via Lepanto, Via Piave, and Via Roma were switched on, while the administration led by Mayor Carmine Lo Sapio extended the lighting to the peripheral neighborhoods to ensure the celebration wasn't confined only to the center.

Entertainment for children and families

Alongside the stalls, Pompei offers a program of traveling entertainment. In December 2025, "The Magic Village of Santa Claus" visited neighborhoods and local parishes—from the Immaculate Conception on Via Tre Ponti to the Sacred Heart on Via Mariconda, from Saint Joseph the Spouse on Via Aldo Moro to the Sacred Hearts of Messigno and Saint Maria Goretti—before concluding in Piazza Schettini and Via Nolana on Christmas Eve. Baby dance, balloon sculpting, shows, inflatables, cotton candy, and the "Santa's Mail" box filled the afternoons. In previous editions, the market weekends were enlivened by street performers, jugglers, glowing stilt-walkers, and puppet theater, with live demonstrations of nougat making.

Two Pompeis in a single day

The strength of this event lies in its location. Just a few minutes' walk from the chalets is the most visited archaeological site in Italy, while behind the square rises the facade of the Sanctuary, a destination for pilgrims all year round and especially during the holidays. In winter, the ruins are less crowded than in high season: a morning among the Roman domus and an afternoon among the city's lights make for a complete day, highly appreciated by those arriving from Naples, the coast, or the Agro Nocerino-Sarnese area.

Tips for your visit

  • The best time for a stroll is late afternoon, when the lights and shop windows are illuminated.
  • Weekends and holidays are the liveliest, but also the most crowded; those traveling with small children might prefer weekday afternoons.
  • The center of Pompei is flat and largely pedestrianized around the square, making it easy to explore on foot.
  • Many exhibitors accept cash only for small purchases.

Between crafts, nativity traditions, and gastronomy, the Pompei Christmas Markets remain one of the most familiar and accessible events of December in Campania.

Pompei Christmas Markets — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Pompei Christmas Markets does not yet have official dates. As of late July 2026, neither the Municipality nor the organizers have released the festive calendar. As every year, the setup of the chalets in Piazza Bartolo Longo and the city's Christmas program are announced between late October and early December. The indicated date is therefore provisional and serves only to place the event in the usual Advent period.

2026 Edition: dates not yet announced

There are no official communications yet regarding the Pompei Christmas Markets for December 2026. The reference remains the traditional setup in Piazza Bartolo Longo, in front of the Sanctuary, with wooden chalets dedicated to crafts, nativity art, and typical Campanian products, integrated into the wider Christmas calendar of the Municipality (tree lighting, city center and neighborhood illuminations, children's entertainment).

Those planning a visit can look at the period between the Immaculate Conception and Epiphany, as in previous editions, and check the channels of the Municipality of Pompei and local press in the weeks leading up to the holidays, when dates, times, and the list of exhibitors are published.

Prices Pompei Christmas Markets 2026

In previous editions, admission to the Pompei Christmas Markets has always been free. For 2026, no fees or paid attractions have been announced.

Practical information — Pompei Christmas Markets

How to get there

By train: The EAV Circumvesuviana (Naples–Poggiomarino line) stops at Pompei Santuario, just a few steps from Piazza Bartolo Longo; the Naples–Sorrento line stops at Pompei Scavi – Villa dei Misteri, on the opposite side of the archaeological area. The Trenitalia Pompei station, on the Naples–Salerno line, is also located near the center. By car: A3 Naples–Salerno motorway, take the Pompei Ovest or Pompei Est exits; on December weekends, it is advisable to leave your car in the peripheral paid parking lots and enter the center on foot.

Admission and hours

Admission to the markets is free. Opening hours for the chalets are announced by the organizers shortly before the inauguration: generally, they open in the afternoon on weekdays and remain open all day on weekends and holidays.

Where to stay

Pompei has numerous hotels, B&Bs, and vacation rentals within a few minutes of the Sanctuary, thanks to its archaeological and religious tourism. Naples, Castellammare di Stabia, and Torre Annunziata are convenient alternatives a short train ride away.

Good to know

The market pairs well with a visit to the Archaeological Park of Pompei and the Sanctuary of the Blessed Virgin of the Rosary; during the Christmas period, it is advisable to check the opening hours of the ruins in advance, as they are reduced compared to the summer.
