A night that never ends

There is one evening at the end of summer when Pomezia decides not to go to sleep. Shutters remain up, tables spill out onto the pavements, squares transform into stages, and the city centre becomes a continuous path of music and lights. This is the Pomezia White Night, the urban festival that concludes the municipal summer event season in the Metropolitan City of Rome, in the heart of Lazio.

It is neither a village fair nor a niche festival: it is a community celebration designed to bring the city centre to life in a unique way, with thousands of people strolling from one stage to another until the early hours of the morning.

Piazza Indipendenza, the heart of the festival

The focal point of the event is Piazza Indipendenza, the large porticoed square overlooked by the town hall and the rationalist architecture of the historic centre. This is where the main stage is set up, hosting the evening's headline concert or DJ set, keeping the energy high until late at night.

Surrounding this, the festivities spread across other squares and open spaces in the centre: in recent years, Piazza San Benedetto, Piazza Bellini, and Largo Columella have all been involved, each with its own programme, allowing the public to walk from one atmosphere to another in just a few minutes.

Music, entertainment, and street performers

The formula is deliberately eclectic and changes from year to year. Recent editions have featured:

• live concerts by local bands and tribute acts dedicated to the greatest decades of pop music;
• DJ sets with 90s and 2000s hits, highly popular with young audiences and families;
• inclusive shows and dance performances, with companies that directly involve the audience;
• street performers, stilt walkers, parades, and roaming acts along the city centre streets;
• children's activities, workshops, and entertainment in the early evening.

Pomezia's cultural and sports associations participate actively with stalls, demonstrations, and small performances: it is one of the moments of the year when the city's entire associative fabric comes together.

Local flavours

The gastronomic aspect has grown significantly in recent years. Alongside the local restaurants and street food stalls, there is a focus on typical products of the Pomezia coast: in particular, the tellina (wedge clam), a true hallmark of Roman coastal cuisine, and the fresh catch from the sea off Torvaianica. There is also no shortage of agricultural excellence from the Lazio hinterland, with tastings and projects promoting short supply chains.

The context: Pomezia and the 'Estate Pometina'

Founded in the 1930s as one of the 'new towns' of the Agro Pontino, Pomezia today has a dual identity: the compact urban centre with its rationalist architecture, and the seaside district of Torvaianica, with kilometres of beaches facing the Tyrrhenian Sea. The White Night is the grand finale of the Estate Pometina, the municipal summer calendar that, from June to September, offers dozens of free events across squares, beaches, the Lavinium Museum, and the archaeological areas of Pratica di Mare.

Torvaianica also hosts its own White Night in the height of summer, dedicated to the seafront; the Pomezia event, however, is the festival of the city centre, marking the transition from the beach season to autumn.
