About Polizzi Carnival

Nestled in the heart of the Madonie mountains, the Polizzi Generosa Carnival is one of Sicily's most enchanting festivals. Donning the traditional 'Dominò'—a dark hooded cloak—the community gathers in the historic center's ballrooms for the 'Fistini di ballu': ribbon dances, poets' rounds, stick dances, contradanzas, and the essential 'u ringu', a convivial tasting moment. This re-enactment culminates on Shrove Tuesday, keeping the local carnival tradition alive every year.

A festival that is living memory

The Polizzi Generosa Carnival stands out in the Sicilian festival scene for its evocative historical re-enactment, which brings the ancient customs of the Polizzi Carnival back to life. In Polizzi Generosa, a village in the province of Palermo perched over 900 meters high in the heart of the Madonie Park, the Carnival is more than just parades and masks: it is the revival of a collective ritual passed down through generations, involving the entire community.

The Dominò and itinerant dances

The absolute star is the Dominò, the typical Polizzi carnival costume: a dark hooded cloak that covers the wearer's face, ensuring the anonymity that is the soul of the Carnival. Once in their Dominò, the locals meet in various venues scattered throughout the historic center, kicking off lively, itinerant dances that animate the village streets until late at night.

The Fistini di ballu

The most characteristic moment is the Fistini di ballu, authentic dance parties held in local halls decorated to recreate the atmosphere of times past. The program of the Fistini includes several distinctive moments:

  • Ballo con coccarde — traditional dance with characteristic colored ribbons;
  • Giro dei poeti — poets improvise verses and rhymes that tell stories and entertain guests, amidst tarantellas, mazurkas, and contradanzas;
  • Ballo del bastone — an ancient ritual dance from the Polizzi repertoire;
  • Contradanza — a traditional figure dance;
  • U ringu — the convivial tasting moment, featuring typical dishes like 'ciciri vugghiuti' (boiled chickpeas), salted sardines, and 'tumazzu' cheese, accompanied by wine, to refresh those dancing all night long.

Poets and music at the heart of the village

Poets and musicians play a fundamental role: with their compositions and rhymes, they restore the charm and beauty of the Polizzi Carnival. It is not uncommon to hear the improvised verses of poets who, with their lyrics, narrate local events and amuse those present. The event is organized by the Pro Loco Polizzi Generosa together with the Accademia Musicale Polizzana association, which also hosts the Youth Carnival.

When and where

The Polizzi Generosa Carnival takes place during the Carnival period, with the highlight days on the weekend and Shrove Tuesday, when the Madonie village transforms into a triumph of masquerade parties. The ballrooms are set up in the historic center, traditionally on via Garibaldi and piazza SS. Trinità. An authentic festival that deserves to be experienced by those wanting to discover inland Sicily and its most genuine traditions.

Polizzi Carnival — edition 2026

In 2026, the Polizzi Generosa Carnival took place from Shrove Thursday, February 12, to Shrove Tuesday, February 17, with the highlight days of Saturday and Tuesday dedicated to the historical re-enactment and the 'Fistini di ballu'. Three ballrooms set up in the historic center hosted ribbon dances, poets' rounds, stick dances, contradanzas, and 'u ringu', while the Accademia Musicale Polizzana hosted the Youth Carnival on Shrove Tuesday.
