About Polenta Festival

Every year, in the days following Ferragosto, Orvinio hosts its Polenta Festival: a tradition spanning over forty years that fills the town square with long dining tables, live music, and the aroma of sausage sauce. The polenta is prepared with organic flour according to an ancient local recipe and served in a signature wooden bowl, which guests keep as a souvenir. Throughout the day, the historic center hosts craft markets and local products from the Rieti area.

A mountain festival with over forty years of history

The Polenta Festival in Orvinio, located in the Rieti province (Lazio), is one of the longest-running gastronomic events in the Lucretili Mountains. Organized by the Pro Loco of Orvinio, it is traditionally held in the days immediately following Ferragosto and reached its 42nd edition in 2025. It is the moment when the village, which has only a few hundred residents in winter, fills with visitors arriving from Rome, the Sabina region, and the nearby Aniene Valley.

Orvinio's polenta: organic flour and an ancient local recipe

The dish that gives the festival its name is no ordinary polenta. It is prepared with organic flour, following a recipe passed down through generations, and cooked in large cauldrons by Pro Loco volunteers. The classic topping is a rich sausage and pork rib sauce, though a simpler tomato version is always available for those who prefer a lighter meal or are dining with children.

The true hallmark of the festival, however, is the wooden bowl: the polenta is not served on a plate, but in a small, handcrafted wooden bowl that guests keep as a souvenir of the evening. It is a detail that perfectly captures the spirit of the festival, deeply rooted in the pastoral and farming traditions of the Rieti Apennines.

How the day unfolds

  • From the morning: Craft and local product markets open along the main street and in the narrow alleys of the historic center.
  • Afternoon: Strolls through the village, visits to the Convent of San Nicola and the castle, and stalls featuring sweets and local goods.
  • From 7 PM: The food stand opens in Piazza del Comune, serving the polenta.
  • Evening: Live music and dancing in the square until late at night, featuring orchestras and traditional folk groups from Lazio.

Orvinio, one of Italy's most beautiful villages

Orvinio is part of the Borghi piรน belli d'Italia (Most Beautiful Villages of Italy) circuit and is located about fifty kilometers from Rome, within the Lucretili Mountains Regional Natural Park. The village preserves an intact medieval layout: stone alleys, the Malvezzi-Campeggi castle overlooking the town, and the 13th-century Convent of San Nicola. The festival is therefore an excellent opportunity to discover a corner of Lazio off the beaten path, just a short distance from the more famous destinations in the Sabina region.

Other festivals in Orvinio

Not to be confused with the Polentone Festival, which the same Pro Loco organizes in the heart of winter, featuring polentone topped with chicory, bacon, and sausage. The Orvinio calendar also includes other popular festivals linked to local cuisine, such as the Sagra dellu Pizzillu and the Orvinio Autumn: a small town, but with a very active community life.

Why it's worth visiting

It is an authentic festival, managed entirely by volunteers, without the commercial trappings of larger events. You eat well, spend little, dance in the square under the stars, and take home a wooden bowl. For those coming from Rome, it is the perfect late-summer evening trip, when the city is still hot and the mountains already offer fresh air.

Polenta Festival โ€” edition 2026

The Pro Loco of Orvinio has not yet announced the date for the 2026 edition of the Polenta Festival. Historically, the event falls in the days following Ferragosto: in 2024 it took place on Saturday, August 17, and in 2025 on Sunday, August 17, always in Piazza del Comune starting at 7 PM. The program will be published on the Pro Loco's Facebook page in the weeks leading up to the event.

2026 Edition: date not yet announced

At the time of checking, the Polenta Festival in Orvinio does not yet have an official date for 2026. However, the event has been held continuously for over forty years and is usually scheduled for the second half of August, immediately after Ferragosto.

Barring any changes, the structure of the day should remain the established one: craft and local product markets in the historic center during the day, opening of the food stand in Piazza del Comune in the evening, and live music to follow. We recommend checking the date and program directly with the Pro Loco of Orvinio (phone +39 334 8535275, email [email protected]) or on their Facebook page.

Practical information — Polenta Festival

How to get there

By car from Rome: take the A24 motorway to the Vicovaro-Mandela exit, then follow signs for Percile and Orvinio (about 1 hour total travel time). Alternatively, take the Via Salaria to Osteria Nuova and then the provincial road towards the Lucretili Mountains. The village is pedestrian-only in the upper part: park in the designated areas at the entrance to the village and continue on foot.

Hours and prices

Craft markets open from the morning along the main street; the food stand in Piazza del Comune opens at 7 PM. In recent editions, a portion of polenta with sausage and pork ribs, a drink, and the wooden bowl has been priced at 15 euros. Admission to the village and the festival is free.

Tips

It is best to arrive in the afternoon to calmly visit the village and the Convent of San Nicola before the queues form at the stand. Bring a sweatshirt: in the evening, at over 800 meters above sea level, the temperature drops significantly even in August. For accommodation in the area, you can rely on the agriturismos of the Lucretili Mountains, but it is best to book in advance during the festival period.
