A festival dedicated to the pizzella

The Pizzella Festival is one of the most beloved gastronomic events of the summer in Castrocielo, a village in the Ciociaria area of the Frosinone province, in southern Lazio. Each year, during the first weekend of July, the Strada Romana area transforms into a vibrant social space where the enticing aroma of fried dough fills the air.

At the heart of the event is the pizzella, the traditional fried pizza of the local farming culture. Born from the ingenuity of grandmothers who would fry small pieces of leavened dough in a pan with a drizzle of oil, the pizzella was once a simple daily staple; today, it has become the delicious symbol of an entire community and the undisputed star of the festival.

Ciociarian flavor and tradition

Surrounding the pizzella, food stalls offer the genuine flavors of Ciociarian cuisine: traditional dishes, local products, and specialties prepared according to recipes passed down through generations. The festival is an opportunity to rediscover a simple, authentic gastronomy rooted in the land and the life of the small villages of the Lazio hinterland.

The event, organized by the Pro Loco of Castrocielo, reached its 32nd edition in 2024, a testament to its decades-long history. It is a popular celebration that unites different generations, from those who have been making pizzelle forever to those discovering them for the first time.

Music, conviviality, and village atmosphere

True to the tradition of Italian food festivals, the tastings are accompanied by live music, evening entertainment, and social moments that animate the Strada Romana area until late at night. Admission is free, and the atmosphere is that of a genuine village feast, where people sit at communal tables to share good food and cheer.

Castrocielo, a village between history and nature

Situated at the foot of Mount Cairo, Castrocielo is a small town rich in history: its territory contains the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Aquinum, now an archaeological park, as well as churches, historic villas, and natural sights like the Capo d'Acqua pond.
