About Pizza Sfogliata Festival

In Rocca di Cambio, the highest village in the Abruzzo Apennines, the Pizza Sfogliata Festival renews an ancient ritual linked to St. Martin every autumn. The 'pizza sfogliata' is a traditional dessert made of thin egg pasta sheets flavored with lemon, pepper, and cinnamon, served alongside chickpea soups, chestnuts, and new wine. Organized by the local Pro Loco, the festival is a deep dive into the rural traditions of the Altopiano delle Rocche, blending seasonal aromas, conviviality, and the memory of a humble dish that has become the town's emblem.

The Pizza Sfogliata Festival in Rocca di Cambio

In the heart of the Altopiano delle Rocche, at an altitude of over 1,400 meters, the town of Rocca di Cambio — the highest inhabited center in the Apennines, located in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo — celebrates the Pizza Sfogliata Festival every autumn. It is an intimate and heartfelt event that brings back to life an ancient rural tradition linked to the feast of St. Martin on November 11th.

An ancient dessert, a community ritual

The 'pizza sfogliata' is the festival's signature dish: a traditional local dessert made of thin egg pasta sheets flavored with lemon, pepper, and cinnamon, and enriched with sugar. Its roots lie in the village's rural culture: it was once prepared for community gatherings and moments of reflection, as well as to celebrate St. Martin, when the village women would gather children and the elderly around the hearth while waiting for the men to return from work.

The flavors of the Abruzzo autumn

During the evening, in addition to the 'pizza sfogliata', visitors can enjoy seasonal specialties from the Altopiano delle Rocche:

  • Chickpea and legume soups
  • Chestnuts from the Apennine autumn
  • Warm traditional rural dishes
  • New wine to accompany the festival's flavors

All this takes place in an atmosphere of conviviality that unites residents and visitors, warmed by the scent of cinnamon and the genuine flavors of the Abruzzo mountains.

A tradition to cherish

The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of Rocca di Cambio, which has been working for years to keep this St. Martin's tradition alive. Traditionally, the event is held on the Saturday following November 11th, in the evening, in the town's communal spaces. More than just a simple food festival, it is a moment of collective identity: a way to pass on to new generations the memory of a humble dish that has become the emblem of Rocca di Cambio and the entire Altopiano delle Rocche.

Rocca di Cambio, between nature and tradition

Nestled in the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, Rocca di Cambio is a popular destination all year round, from summer hiking to winter skiing in Campo Felice. The Pizza Sfogliata Festival offers the perfect opportunity to discover the most authentic and convivial side of this mountain village, where gastronomic traditions tell the story of centuries of Apennine life.
