The ancient St. Martin's ritual in Rocca di Cambio, on the Altopiano delle Rocche

In the heart of the Altopiano delle Rocche, at an altitude of over 1,400 meters, the town of Rocca di Cambio — the highest inhabited center in the Apennines, located in the province of L'Aquila, Abruzzo — celebrates the Pizza Sfogliata Festival every autumn. It is an intimate and heartfelt event that brings back to life an ancient rural tradition linked to the feast of St. Martin on November 11th.
The 'pizza sfogliata' is the festival's signature dish: a traditional local dessert made of thin egg pasta sheets flavored with lemon, pepper, and cinnamon, and enriched with sugar. Its roots lie in the village's rural culture: it was once prepared for community gatherings and moments of reflection, as well as to celebrate St. Martin, when the village women would gather children and the elderly around the hearth while waiting for the men to return from work.
During the evening, in addition to the 'pizza sfogliata', visitors can enjoy seasonal specialties from the Altopiano delle Rocche:
All this takes place in an atmosphere of conviviality that unites residents and visitors, warmed by the scent of cinnamon and the genuine flavors of the Abruzzo mountains.
The festival is organized by the Pro Loco of Rocca di Cambio, which has been working for years to keep this St. Martin's tradition alive. Traditionally, the event is held on the Saturday following November 11th, in the evening, in the town's communal spaces. More than just a simple food festival, it is a moment of collective identity: a way to pass on to new generations the memory of a humble dish that has become the emblem of Rocca di Cambio and the entire Altopiano delle Rocche.
Nestled in the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park, Rocca di Cambio is a popular destination all year round, from summer hiking to winter skiing in Campo Felice. The Pizza Sfogliata Festival offers the perfect opportunity to discover the most authentic and convivial side of this mountain village, where gastronomic traditions tell the story of centuries of Apennine life.
The 2026 edition of the Pizza Sfogliata Festival in Rocca di Cambio does not yet have an official date. The detailed program will be announced by the Pro Loco of Rocca di Cambio in the weeks leading up to the event.
Rocca di Cambio can be reached by car from the A24 motorway (L'Aquila Est/Ovest exit), heading up towards the Altopiano delle Rocche. The nearest airport is Pescara. The reference train station is L'Aquila.
