About Pisa Marathon

The Pisa Marathon is the running event that transforms the city of the Leaning Tower into a grand celebration of sport every December. With the start and finish in the heart of the historic center, just steps from Piazza del Duomo, the route takes runners along the Lungarni, through the San Rossore Park, and out to the Tyrrhenian coast, before returning to finish beneath the iconic Tower. Featuring a 42 km marathon, the 21 km "La Pisanina" half marathon, and the Christmas Family Run for everyone: a weekend of racing, holiday atmosphere, and historic heritage in the heart of Tuscany.

Pisa Marathon: running through history

The Pisa Marathon is one of the most beloved road races in Tuscany and all of Central Italy. Every year, just before Christmas, it attracts thousands of runners from dozens of countries to the heart of the Municipality of Pisa, in the Province of Pisa, for an event that blends sport, tourism, and artistic heritage. The official slogan perfectly captures the spirit of the event: "Run through history. Experience Pisa, conquer the Tower".

A unique route through city, park, and sea

The marathon course, measured according to AIMS, World Athletics, and FIDAL standards, starts in the historic center near Piazza del Duomo, the famous Field of Miracles. From there, participants run along the picturesque Lungarni, cross the San Rossore Natural Park, and reach the Tyrrhenian coast, before returning along the Arno river to cross the finish line right under the Leaning Tower. It is a fast and scenic route that combines the monumental beauty of the city with the open air of the Tuscan landscape.

The races on the program

  • Marathon (42.195 km): the flagship event, on a flat and fast course ideal for chasing a personal best.
  • "La Pisanina" Half Marathon (21.097 km): follows the same route as the marathon with a turnaround point to finish under the Tower.
  • Christmas Family Run (approx. 6.4 km / 4 miles): a non-competitive run designed for families and enthusiasts, in the true spirit of Christmas.

A weekend of sport beneath the Tower

The event is not limited to race day: the Expo Village, set up next to the Leaning Tower of Pisa, welcomes athletes and visitors to pick up their race bibs and explore stands featuring technical gear and local products. The Christmas atmosphere that envelops the city in December makes this event the perfect opportunity to combine running with a tourist getaway in Tuscany.

An international-level event

In recent years, the Pisa Marathon has seen constant growth in participation and prestige, with runners arriving from around twenty countries and delivering high-level performances. Organized by the sports club 1063AD, it is now a fixed date on the Italian end-of-year running calendar and one of the most representative sporting events in the Pisa area.

Pisa Marathon — edition 2026

The 27th edition of the Pisa Marathon is scheduled for Sunday, December 20, 2026, starting at 9:00 AM from the historic center, near Piazza del Duomo. Three events: 42 km marathon, 21 km "La Pisanina" half marathon, and the Christmas Family Run. For the first time, the Expo Village will be set up on Viale Duomo, next to the Leaning Tower.

The 2026 edition of the Pisa Marathon confirms the winning formula that has made the event famous: a fast and scenic route with start and finish in the monumental heart of the city. The marathon (42.195 km) and the "La Pisanina" half marathon (21.097 km) start together at 9:00 AM, while the Christmas Family Run of approximately 6.4 km is scheduled for Saturday afternoon. All races conclude beneath the Leaning Tower.

Significant novelty: the Expo Village, home to bib pickup and stands, is being set up for the first time on Viale Duomo, right next to the Tower, in an even more spectacular setting.
