Science explained over a beer in the pubs of Messina
Pint of Science is the world's largest science communication festival: born in the UK, it now takes place in dozens of countries, and in Italy, it involves dozens of cities every year. The concept is as simple as it is effective: bring scientific research out of the labs and into the pubs, where researchers share their work with the general public in an accessible way, over a beer. In Messina, in the heart of Sicily overlooking the Strait, the event has become a mid-May classic, organized with the support of the University of Messina.
The Messina format follows the national one: three consecutive nights, each hosted in a different pub and dedicated to a specific theme. Each session features one or two speakers presenting their work in a short, informal talk, followed by a Q&A with the audience. The three thematic tracks are distributed across three venues in the city of Messina:
The tone is intentionally light: no podiums or academic slides, just scientists explaining virtual and augmented reality, cryptography, microplastics in food, supplements, applied robotics, and global health in everyday language. It is a way to bring citizens, students, and the curious closer to the research produced right here in the universities and research centers of the Messina area and Sicily.
Admission is free for all meetings, subject to availability: the pubs fill up quickly, and the evenings are often sold out. Pint of Science Messina has established itself as one of the most anticipated cultural events of the city's spring, capable of blending the convivial tradition of the pub with a passion for knowledge, in a region, Sicily, rich in universities and centers of scientific excellence.
The 2026 edition of Pint of Science in Messina was held from Monday, May 18 to Wednesday, May 20, with meetings starting at 9:00 PM and free admission. The three thematic tracks were hosted in three different venues: Tech Me Out at the Irish Pub in Ganzirri, Social Sciences at La Piazzetta, and Our Body at the Birrificio Artigianale Zankle.
Among the scheduled talks: VR & AR: Drunk in reality, sober in virtual (Felice Sfravara), From Caesar to quantum: a journey into cryptography (Riccardo Pengo), and The silicon age and beyond (Antonio Alessio Leonardi) for the technology track; Do children with autism interact with robots?, All the world's a stage (Katia Trifirò), and A world out of balance for social sciences; Aperiplastic: beer, food, and microplastics, Dietary supplements: help or hype? (Natasha Irrera), and True OneHealth! Cooperation experiences (Ettore Napoli) for health.
Three consecutive nights in mid-May, with meetings starting at 9:00 PM.
Irish Pub in Ganzirri (Via Consolare Pompea 244), La Piazzetta (Via Lepanto 9), and Birrificio Artigianale Zankle (Viale Principe Umberto 139/143), in Messina.
Free, subject to availability. We recommend arriving early as the venues fill up quickly.
Messina is connected by train to the central station and by ferry from Villa San Giovanni; the city center pubs are within walking distance, while for Ganzirri, it is best to use a car or public transport towards the lake area.
