The historic Carnival of Pieve di Cento with the Barbaspein mask and allegorical float parades
The Carneval d'la Piv, or the Carnival of Pieve di Cento, is one of the most beloved events in the Province of Bologna and throughout Emilia-Romagna. Its origins date back to the mid-nineteenth century, when the historic Sozietè dal Zàss initiated the first carnival festivities in the village. Since then, the tradition has never been interrupted, transforming the Corso del Guercino and the historic center of Pieve into a grand open-air stage every year.
The heart of the event is the grand allegorical floats, authentic papier-mâché works built in the preceding months by the twelve carnival societies of the town: Bastacsìa, Miserabel, Puc e Bon, Sumaren, Caval bon, Avgnir-Cagnon, Barcon, Pink Lady, l'Ottavo Nano, Magnagat, La Busa, and i Galli. During the parades, alongside the floats, you'll see:
The absolute protagonist is Barbaspein, the official mask of the Pieve Carnival: a popular character, part philosopher and part bon vivant, with an unkempt beard and a fondness for good food and good wine. Originally a figure actually carried around on a litter during 19th-century festivals, it was artistically reinterpreted in the 1980s by the painter Pirro Cuniberti, becoming the recognizable symbol of the festival.
The Carneval d'la Piv is an event tailored for families and children: the parades wind along Corso del Guercino, starting in the early afternoon and continuing until sunset. Admission is by free donation, supporting the activities of the carnival societies and the Pro Loco of Pieve di Cento, which organizes the event together with the Municipality and with the patronage of the Emilia-Romagna Region.
The 2026 edition of the Carnival of Pieve di Cento animated the historic center with four grand Sunday parades, with free admission by donation, always starting at 2:30 PM.
Each day featured the allegorical floats of the Pieve carnival societies, costumed groups, dancers, jugglers, face painters, and entertainment for the little ones, with the presence of the Barbaspein mask.
Opening parade with musical selections by DJ Cucurullo and Ivo Morini dedicated to 90s and 2000s dance music.
Second day of parades with Brazilian percussion and dances from the samba schools Escola de Samba Vamolà and Sambeleza.
Third parade with the award for the most beautiful float, voted with the involvement of Pieve di Cento schools.
Grand finale with the cartoon cover band La Bandessa, the cosplay competition (new for 2026) with awards for the best under and over 14 cosplayers, and final greetings with the announcement of the next edition.
On all days: jugglers, stilt walkers, face painters, mascots, baby dance by Il Mondo del Ballo, entertainment, and the photographic exhibition Facce di Carnevale (Faces of Carnival).
Pieve di Cento is located in the Bolognese plain, on the border with the Province of Ferrara. By car, it can be reached from the A13 Bologna-Padua motorway (Altedo or Ferrara Sud exit) and from the SP4 Galliera. By train, the nearest stations are Bologna and San Pietro in Casale, connected by bus to the town.
Admission is by free donation. The parades take place along Corso del Guercino and in the historic center, starting at 2:30 PM.
Arrive a little early to find a spot along the parade route and better experience the atmosphere. Event suitable for children and families. Parking available on the outskirts of the historic center, which is closed to traffic during the parades.
