The concert season at the Teatro Papini in Pieve Santo Stefano
In Pieve Santo Stefano, a village in the Valtiberina area of the Province of Arezzo, the Teatro Comunale Giovanni Papini hosts one of the most refined musical festivals in Eastern Tuscany: Pieve Classica. Launched in 2014 by the Coro Altotiberino in collaboration with the local council, the season has established itself as a key fixture in the regional cultural scene, bringing national-level artists and ensembles to a charming local stage.
The festival's title refers not only to a specific historical repertoire but to a broader concept of musical tradition that evolves and engages with different eras. The programme reflects this diversity, featuring classical and baroque music, opera, jazz, swing, and singer-songwriter performancesโranging from big bands to solo pianists, and from polyphonic choirs to brass ensembles. This variety makes Pieve Classica an event that appeals to both seasoned enthusiasts and those experiencing live music for the first time.
Performances take place at the Teatro Comunale Giovanni Papini, located on the top floor of the historic Palazzo Pretorio. It is a cozy venue where the proximity between the stage and the audience creates a direct, chamber-like connection with the performers. In recent years, the festival has also introduced an artistic trail along the theatre's staircase, featuring painting exhibitions designed to complement the musical evenings.
Pieve Classica runs from January to May with about ten events, alternating with the theatre's prose season, Metamorfosi. The festival is promoted by the Municipality of Pieve Santo Stefano and the Coro Altotiberino, with local support, and stands as one of the most cherished cultural events for the Valtiberina community and visitors from across Tuscany and nearby Umbria.
The twelfth edition of Pieve Classica took place at the Teatro Comunale Giovanni Papini in Pieve Santo Stefano from January 24 to May 16, 2026, featuring ten musical events, mostly scheduled weekly, alternating with the Metamorfosi prose season.
The programme confirmed the festival's eclectic identity, successfully bridging different genres: from the orchestral jazz of the Pieve Jazz Big Band to the swing of the Sinatra tribute, from Morgan's piano recital to the choral polyphony of the Coro EOS, and the brilliance of the Rossini Brass Ensemble. The season was a great success with the public, with Morgan's concert selling out completely.
Organized by the Coro Altotiberino with the Municipality of Pieve Santo Stefano, the festival also featured an exhibition trail along the theatre's staircase, highlighting the connection between music and the visual arts.
The season opened in the second half of January and concluded on May 16, 2026, totaling ten musical events. All performances started at 9:15 PM.
Pieve Santo Stefano is located in the upper Valtiberina, along the SS3bis E45 Cesena-Orte road (take the Pieve Santo Stefano exit). By car, it is approximately 40 km from Arezzo and 20 km from Sansepolcro. The nearest train station is in Sansepolcro, which is connected by regional buses.
All events are held at the Teatro Comunale Giovanni Papini, located on the top floor of the Palazzo Pretorio in the town's historic centre.
Tickets and season passes can be purchased online via the ticketsms.it platform or, subject to availability, at the theatre box office on the evening of the performance. Early booking is recommended for popular concerts.
