Contemporary art in the heart of the Casentinesi Forests
PICTA is the contemporary art exhibition that every summer reaches the IDRO Ecomuseum of Waters of Ridracoli, in the territory of the Municipality of Santa Sofia, in the province of Forlì-Cesena. The exhibition is part of the widespread project Picta Romagna, a European exhibition that during the season touches various locations in Romagna — from Terra del Sole to Castrocaro Terme, Forlì, Forlimpopoli, Meldola, and Faenza — to conclude in the natural setting of the Ridracoli dam, defined by the organizers as the final act of a unique cultural journey.
Set up in the heart of the Casentinesi Forests, within and around the Ecomuseum managed by Romagna Acque – Società delle Fonti, the group exhibition relates the artists' works to water, the forest, and the large dam. The theme chosen for the edition focuses on the relationship between artistic creation and the natural context: installations and paintings confront an environment where human presence blends with the wild nature of the Tuscan-Romagnolo Apennines.
PICTA brings together Italian and foreign artists in a group exhibition that enhances the international dimension of the event. The initiative is conceived by Giuseppe Bertolino, with critical curation by Michele Govoni, and is promoted by the association Cava Forever group aps in collaboration with Romagna Acque – Società delle Fonti. The project involves regional institutions, the Province of Forlì-Cesena, and the municipal administration, confirming the deep link between the event and the territory.
The exhibition offers an opportunity to discover one of the most fascinating places in Emilia-Romagna: the IDRO Ecomuseum tells the story of water, the dam, and the Casentinesi Forests National Park through interactive paths, while the artificial lake of Ridracoli offers spectacular views, also accessible by electric boat. The visit to the exhibition thus integrates with a complete experience of nature, science, and culture.
PICTA at the IDRO Ecomuseum is an event designed for those who love contemporary art and wish to experience it in an extraordinary context, where each work resonates with the landscape of the dam and the forests.
For 2026, PICTA returns to the IDRO Ecomuseum of Waters of Ridracoli, in the Municipality of Santa Sofia, with an inauguration scheduled for July 2, 2026, at 5:00 PM. The exhibition, open until July 26, concludes the widespread Picta Romagna 2026 tour in the natural setting of the Casentinesi Forests.
The group exhibition brings together Italian and European artists, creating a dialogue between their works and the environment of the dam and the forest. The initiative is promoted by Cava Forever group in collaboration with Romagna Acque – Società delle Fonti. The complete list of artists and exhibition visiting hours will be announced by the organizers closer to the inauguration.
The IDRO Ecomuseum is located in the village of Ridracoli, reachable by car from the SP4 road, going up the Bidente valley towards Santa Sofia and then in the direction of Ridracoli. From the Via Emilia (Forlì or Cesena), follow the signs for Santa Sofia and Bagno di Romagna. Ample parking is available near the dam.
During the summer, the Ecomuseum is open every day except Monday, typically from 9:00 AM to 7:00 PM. Admission to the museum and the dam costs approximately €5 (full price) and €4 (reduced); free admission for residents of Santa Sofia and Bagno di Romagna, for children under 100 cm, and for people with disabilities. An electric boat excursion on the lake is also available. It is advisable to check the official channels for exhibition hours and visiting procedures.
