The ancient pastoral fair of the Gran Sasso, featuring herds, transhumance, and mountain flavors
The Piano Roseto Pastoral Fair is one of the oldest and most deeply rooted pastoral events in Abruzzo. It takes place on the plateau of the same name, at an altitude of about 1,200 meters, a plain shared between the municipalities of Cortino and Crognaleto, in the province of Teramo, in the heart of the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park. Now in its 162nd edition, the fair has its roots in a time when this mountain crossroads was a place for meeting, livestock trading, and exchange between the pastoral communities of the upper valley.
The event was born and continues to thrive around pastoralism, an activity that for centuries has represented the main economic and cultural resource of these lands. Even today, the fair promotes local livestock farms, sheep and cattle breeding, animal welfare, and practices related to transhumance and high-altitude grazing. It is a bastion of the Teramo mountain identity, capable of looking to the past without forgetting the future of the Apennine agro-pastoral economy.
During the event, the plateau comes alive with animal exhibitions and herds, markets featuring typical products and agricultural crafts, food and wine stands, and convivial moments. Among the stars of the table are mountain cheeses such as pecorino and ricotta, arrosticini, cured meats, and traditional Abruzzese pastoral dishes.
The fair is organized by the Piano Roseto Pastoral Fair Committee, composed of representatives from the Gran Sasso d'Italia Chamber of Commerce and the municipalities of Crognaleto and Cortino, with the collaboration of numerous bodies including the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, the Regional Breeders Association, Coldiretti and CIA, the Zooprophylactic Experimental Institute of Abruzzo and Molise, the University of Teramo, and the ASL veterinary services. This network effort makes it a key appointment for the mountain economy and the promotion of the Teramo territory.
The 162nd edition of the Piano Roseto Pastoral Fair was held from July 3 to 6, 2026, marking the return of the event after the 2025 cancellation due to the spread of the Bluetongue virus. Strongly supported by the municipalities of Crognaleto and Cortino and the Gran Sasso d'Italia Chamber of Commerce, the fair opened on Friday with food stands and continued over the weekend with the exhibition of herds and the awarding of breeders.
On the plateau, in the Gran Sasso and Monti della Laga National Park, religious, technical, and cultural moments alternated with markets of typical products and agricultural crafts, as well as stands featuring Abruzzese pastoral specialties. The edition involved local livestock farms and producers, confirming the event's role as a key appointment for the Teramo mountain economy.
