About Philippine Independence Rome

Every year, on the Sunday closest to June 12th, Rome's Filipino community gathers at the Sala Olimpia of the Ergife Palace Hotel to celebrate the anniversary of Philippine independence. Organized by the PIDA association, the day features a solemn mass, a grand parade of associations, traditional dances, martial arts, fashion shows, and a vast gastronomic area showcasing the flavors of the archipelago. It is the most attended identity-focused event for the capital's second-largest foreign community.

A community celebration in the heart of Rome

For over thirty years, the Philippine National Independence Day Festival has been the most significant cultural touchstone for the Filipino community in Rome—one of the city's oldest and largest, and the second-largest foreign community in the capital. Starting as a modest gathering within the Embassy, the celebration has grown to occupy the entire Sala Olimpia of the Ergife Palace Hotel, in the Aurelio district of Rome, within the Metropolitan City of Rome Capital, in the Lazio region.

The event commemorates the proclamation of Philippine independence from Spanish rule on June 12, 1898. It is held on the Sunday closest to that date to ensure maximum participation from workers and families.

Who organizes it

The event is driven by the PIDA - Philippine Independence Day Association, an association registered since 2009 with its own charter and board of directors. It unites dozens of sporting, civic, cultural, and social groups from the Filipino diaspora in Italy, with the Ambassador serving as honorary president. The organizational machine mobilizes over two hundred volunteers across twelve committees, involving around fifty cultural associations from Rome, as well as Naples, Florence, Salerno, and the Marche region.

The day's program

The day begins early, around 7:30 AM, with a solemn mass and official greetings from Italian and Filipino diplomatic authorities. From there, the day unfolds continuously until evening, alternating between institutional moments and entertainment:

  • Grand Parade of cultural associations in traditional attire, the visual heart of the festival;
  • Folkloric dances from the various regions of the archipelago—from the Singkil to the Tinikling, from the Calacatsara to the Ati-Atihan;
  • Singing and musical performances by young artists and violinists, featuring patriotic Filipino songs;
  • Demonstrations of traditional martial arts;
  • Historical re-enactment in costume dedicated to the 24 heroes who contributed to the country's independence;
  • Fashion show featuring outfits made from recycled materials, sewn by the community's mothers;
  • Awards ceremony for young graduates, doctoral students, and Italo-Filipino athletes.

Flavors of the Philippines

A large portion of the space is dedicated to gastronomy: community restaurateurs offer traditional dishes and typical drinks, while dozens of stalls sell products imported directly from the archipelago. Alongside the food area, there is a dense network of commercial stands and citizen services—travel agencies, money transfer services, mobile operators, and advocacy groups—making the day a major hub for information and mutual support.

Why it's worth attending

For a Roman local or a tourist, the PIDA festival is a rare and authentic gateway to a Southeast Asian culture lived daily just a few kilometers from the Vatican. It is not an event staged for an external audience; it is a community celebrating itself, which is precisely why the welcome is warm and the curiosity of Italian visitors is always encouraged. Admission to the event is free; you only pay for what you consume or purchase at the stands.

Philippine Independence Rome — edition 2026

On Sunday, June 14, 2026, the Sala Olimpia of the Ergife Palace Hotel hosted the 128th anniversary of Philippine independence, organized by PIDA. About seven thousand people from Rome and surrounding provinces attended the morning mass, the Grand Parade of over fifty associations, traditional dances, and the first historical re-enactment dedicated to the 24 heroes of independence.

2026 Edition: The 128th Anniversary

The June 14, 2026 edition was one of the most attended ever, with approximately 7,000 attendees and forty-nine cultural groups on stage. Guests included the Philippine Ambassador to Italy, Neal Imperial, and the newly appointed Ambassador to the Holy See, Raphael Perpetuo Lotilla. For the first time, a historical re-enactment in costume was staged, dedicated to the 24 Filipino heroes who led to the proclamation of independence on June 12, 1898. A major focus was placed on youth: over twenty new graduates and doctoral researchers were awarded, along with Italo-Filipino athletes who distinguished themselves at the 2025 Southeast Asian Games in windsurfing, rhythmic gymnastics, hockey, and basketball.
