Simbang Gabi is one of the most cherished Filipino Christmas traditions, brought to the world by the diaspora. In Rome, in the heart of the Metropolitan City of Rome, the vast Filipino community—numbering about 47,000 people across the capital and its metropolitan area—celebrates it every year between December 15th and 23rd with nine days of liturgies preparing for the Holy Christmas. It is a dawn novena, a "sacrifice of love" rooted in the popular devotion of the Philippines, which in Rome also becomes a moment of gathering, celebration, and identity for an entire community.

From Santa Pudenziana to St. Peter's

The reference point for the Filipino Catholic community in Rome is the Basilica of Santa Pudenziana on Via Urbana, home to the chaplaincy established in 1991 by Saint John Paul II. Most of the novena celebrations are held here, animated by Filipino hymns and customs. However, the most solemn moment of the Roman Simbang Gabi takes place in St. Peter's Basilica in the Vatican, where thousands of faithful gather for the Mass that gives voice to the faith and unity of Filipinos in Italy. The community is organized into over 60 pastoral groups distributed across the city's various neighborhoods, with the Sentro Filipino Chaplaincy serving as the main hub.

The 2025 edition with Cardinal Tagle

In 2025, the solemn celebration was held on Sunday, December 21st, the fourth Sunday of Advent, at St. Peter's Basilica. It was presided over by Cardinal Luis Antonio Tagle, Pro-Prefect of the Dicastery for Evangelization and a figure deeply loved by Filipino faithful, alongside Father Ronan Ayag, chaplain of the Sentro Filipino Chaplaincy, and other Filipino priests in Rome. Thousands of people, with a strong presence of youth, filled the basilica under the theme "Pasko sa Jubileo 2025," which linked the Filipino feast to the Church's Jubilee Year. At the end of the Mass, according to tradition, some children offered flowers to the image of the Virgin. Back in 2019, Pope Francis had presided over the "Misa de Aguinaldo" in St. Peter's for the first time, with over 6,000 participants and 150 concelebrating priests.

The meaning of a centuries-old tradition

Simbang Gabi—literally "night mass"—is a novena of nine masses celebrated at dawn in the days leading up to Christmas. In the Philippines, it is a centuries-old tradition that marks the Advent season; in the diaspora, it has become a symbol of belonging and shared faith. In Rome, the novena combines spiritual and community dimensions: the liturgies are accompanied by Filipino Christmas carols, colors, flavors, and conviviality, making this festival a deeply felt event for the entire community.
