A celebration of the Tarocco orange and folk traditions on the 'Balcony of Sicily'
The PGI Sicilian Red Orange Festival is the spring highlight that the town of Centuripe, in the province of Enna, dedicates to its most iconic citrus fruit: the Tarocco red orange. Renowned across Italy for its intensely colored flesh, unique sweetness, and fragrant aroma, this fruit takes center stage for three days as the historic center transforms into a showcase of flavors and traditions. The event aims to promote both this local treasure and the archaeological and scenic beauty of a village aptly nicknamed the 'Balcony of Sicily'.
The heart of the event lies in the free tastings featuring red oranges: from fresh juices to sweet delicacies, such as the famous Red Orange cake prepared by students from local hospitality schools. The streets of the center come alive with markets featuring stalls from local artisans, merchants, and farmers, where visitors can purchase fresh oranges and zero-kilometer products. The program also includes conferences and in-depth discussions on the citrus supply chain, a true engine of the Centuripe economy.
The festival is also a grand popular celebration. The days are marked by parades of traditional Sicilian carts, folk groups in costume, and the music and songs of the island's heritage. These performances and processions wind through the village's distinctive 16th-century urban layout. Evenings in Piazza Duomo and on the churchyard of the Mother Church host cabaret, theater, and live music performances featuring artists from the Sicilian and national scene.
Perched on a ridge with views stretching all the way to Mount Etna, Centuripe is famous for its unique urban shape—resembling a swallow with wings spread—and its rich Greco-Roman archaeological heritage. During the festival, guided city tours are organized, offering the perfect opportunity to discover Piazza Duomo, the Mother Church with its Baroque facade, and the panoramic viewpoints that have made this corner of Sicily famous. The Red Orange Festival thus unites taste and culture, offering visitors an authentic immersion into the traditions of the Enna province.
The 12th PGI Sicilian Red Orange Festival brought Centuripe to life from April 24 to 26, 2026. Friday, April 24 saw the opening of the markets along the city streets (5:00 PM), followed by an institutional procession, a brass band performance, free tastings of the Red Orange cake in Piazza Duomo, and in the evening, the "Insieme" show on the Mother Church square featuring Salvo La Rosa, Giuseppe Castiglia, Loredana Scalia, and Andrea Barone.
Saturday, April 25 featured the opening of the markets with background music, guided city tours, and a wreath-laying ceremony at the War Memorial. Sunday, April 26 included the Sicilian cart parade (10:00 AM), performances by the Korè and "Sicilia Bedda" folk groups, traditional music and songs throughout the day, and concluded with Andrea Perroni's theatrical show "Meglio dal vivo".
Centuripe can be reached by car via the A19 Palermo-Catania motorway (Catenanuova exit) or the SS121, nestled in the hills of the Enna hinterland. The nearest train station is Catenanuova-Centuripe; the main airports are Catania-Fontanarossa and Comiso.
Admission to the festival is free. Tastings provided by the organization are free of charge. For information and to book guided tours, please call +39 320 1450685 or +39 338 4399536. Program updates are available on the official Facebook page of the event.
We recommend wearing comfortable shoes to explore the uphill historic center and taking advantage of the guided tours to discover the breathtaking views of Mount Etna.
