Three evenings of flavor, folk music, and conviviality in the Sant'Antonio area of Buccino
The Percoca Festival is one of the most recent—and most popular—summer events in the Municipality of Buccino, in the province of Salerno, deep in the Campania hinterland. The first edition was held in July 2025, after the event had been cancelled the previous year despite being fully prepared; since 2026, the festival has expanded to three evenings, confirming a successful formula that combines local produce, outdoor dining, and live music.
The heart of the festival is a fruit that is truly at home here: the percoca, a firm, compact, yellow-fleshed peach. Because it does not easily detach from the pit, it is perfect for preserving, turning into syrup, or using in cooking. In the rows and orchards of the Alto Sele and Tanagro Valley, the percoca ripens between July and August and has always been a pillar of the local agricultural economy, as well as a staple of family memories: percoca in red wine, served chilled at the end of a meal, is a tradition passed down through generations in these parts.
The festival takes place in the Sant'Antonio area, just outside the historic center of Buccino. It is an open-air space that fills up for three nights with food stalls, local producers' stands, and long communal tables: the formula is that of a classic village fair, with kitchens opening from 8:30 PM and the evening continuing with music until late.
The common thread of the culinary offerings is the creative reinterpretation of the percoca: the fruit is not confined to dessert, but finds its way into savory dishes, pairings with local cured meats and cheeses, and special preparations designed by local chefs. Alongside the percoca-based dishes, other agri-food excellences of the district are showcased, promoted in collaboration with local farms and producers. The stated goal of the municipal administration, led by Mayor Pasquale Freda, is to promote Buccino through its flavors, traditions, and hospitality.
The evenings are accompanied by folk music and pizzica: tammorre, accordions, and tarantellas from the South, with the audience dancing in front of the stage. This choice is consistent with the event's identity, which looks to the rural roots of the territory rather than large-scale stage shows—the latter being reserved for other events in the Buccino summer calendar.
The Percoca Festival has a meaning that goes beyond gastronomy: since its first edition, it has been dedicated to the memory of Francesco Morriello, a fifteen-year-old boy who passed away in a road accident. His family supports and accompanies the event, transforming the memory into a message of solidarity and sharing: the three evenings are designed as a moment for the community to come together, and this emotional dimension is what has made the festival so deeply felt in the village.
Those arriving for the festival have the opportunity to discover a village with a rich history. Buccino stands on the site of the ancient Volcei, a Lucanian and later Roman city: the National Archaeological Museum of Volcei, the domus, the thermal baths, and the urban archaeological park reveal the stratification of a settlement that has existed for over two millennia. These are complemented by the medieval castle, the Cloister of the Hermits, and a network of alleys overlooking the valley. Its position, straddling the Alburni, the Picentini Mountains, and the Tanagro Valley, makes Buccino a great base for excursions and for reaching the Cilento coast in a day trip.
The festival is part of the Summer in Buccino program, which from June to August alternates between patronal feasts, cultural events, and concerts. In 2026, the municipal calendar included, among others, the Volcei Beer Fest in mid-July, the «A' la Chiazza» festival in early August, the White Night on Ferragosto, and the feasts of Santa Croce and the Madonna del Carmine. The Percoca Festival, held on the last weekend of July, has now become a fixed fixture on the calendar.
From July 24 to 26, 2026, the Percoca Festival returned to Buccino, in the province of Salerno, for its second edition. Compared to the 2025 debut, which was concentrated into a single evening, 2026 saw the event grow to three evenings in the Sant'Antonio area.
The program focused on the percoca, the signature fruit of local orchards, offered in creative dishes served from 8:30 PM alongside other local agri-food excellences. Accompanying the communal tables were evenings of folk music and pizzica, in an atmosphere of celebration and sharing.
Once again, the festival was dedicated to the memory of Francesco Morriello, with the support of his family: a way to transform memory into a message of solidarity for the entire Buccino community. The event is part of the official Summer in Buccino 2026 program promoted by the municipal administration led by Mayor Pasquale Freda.
The organization did not release a detailed hourly schedule or the names of the guest groups for individual evenings.
Buccino is located in the hinterland of the province of Salerno. By car: A2 del Mediterraneo motorway, exit Sicignano degli Alburni, then the Sicignano-Potenza motorway junction until the Buccino exit. The festival area is in the Sant'Antonio district, just outside the town center, with parking available nearby.
Food stalls open from 8:30 PM; live music animates the evenings until late.
The organizers have not announced an entrance fee: as is customary for village festivals, access to the area is free and tastings are purchased directly at the stalls.
Summer evenings in the Salerno hinterland can be cool: it is advisable to bring a light sweater. Before dinner, it is worth visiting the historic center and the National Archaeological Museum of Volcei.
