The parade of allegorical floats through the alleys of the 'Brick City'
The Penne Carnival is one of the most cherished winter events in Penne, a medieval town in the province of Pescara, Abruzzo, known as the "Brick City" for the distinctive exposed brickwork of its architecture. For a few days, the historic center turns into a vast open-air stage where the tradition of local papier-mâché masters meets the playful spirit of costumed groups.
The heart of the festival is the parade of allegorical floats, built from papier-mâché by local artisans and often inspired by satire and current events. The procession winds through the streets of the historic center, traditionally starting from Viale Ringa and weaving through the alleys to the main squares, such as Piazza Luca da Penne. Alongside the floats, costumed groups, bands, and performers parade to the sound of music and confetti, creating an atmosphere of joy that delights both young and old.
Following a long hiatus due to the pandemic, the event has returned to fill the streets of Penne, bringing back one of the community's most beloved traditions. The initiative is promoted by the Municipality of Penne in collaboration with local associations, with the goal of celebrating the historic center and the tradition of the floats.
True to Abruzzese tradition, Carnival in Penne is also an opportunity to enjoy typical seasonal sweets: frappe (or chiacchiere), thin fried pastries dusted with powdered sugar, and cicerchiata, the characteristic ring-shaped treat made of small fried dough balls bound with honey. A perfect blend of taste and tradition that accompanies the festivities through the village streets.
The Penne Carnival is more than just a parade; it is a moment of collective participation that unites the entire citizenry. The dates, tied to the movable Carnival calendar, usually fall between late February and early March, with the main events taking place on Sunday and Shrove Tuesday. Visitors to the Pescara hinterland during this time will find in Penne an authentic opportunity to discover Abruzzese folklore and the vitality of one of the region's most picturesque villages.
For the 2026 edition of the Penne Carnival, the dates were set in February, in line with the Carnival calendar, featuring the parade of allegorical floats through the streets of Penne's historic center and culminating in the Shrove Tuesday festivities. The full program, including final times and routes, was not officially published at the time of data collection.
The parades take place in the historic center of Penne (PE), along the streets leading from Viale Ringa to the main squares of the village, including Piazza Luca da Penne.
By car: Penne can be reached from the A14 motorway (Pescara Ovest / Chieti exit) or the A25, then continuing along provincial roads towards the Pescara hinterland. By train: the reference station is Pescara Centrale, which is connected to Penne by regional bus lines.
The parades along the streets of the center are free and open to the public.
As these are outdoor events held in winter, appropriate clothing is recommended; dates may be subject to change in case of bad weather, so it is advisable to check for updates from the Municipality of Penne.
