Memory, nature, and community for April 25th in Collesalvetti
The Peace Walk is the event through which the Municipality of Collesalvetti, in the Province of Livorno, celebrates the Liberation Anniversary every April 25th. Established in 2005 and now in its twenty-first year, it has become one of the most heartfelt civic gatherings on the Tuscan coast, bringing together over 1,500 people for a day that intertwines historical memory, local exploration, and community celebration.
The meeting point is the Colognole Multipurpose Area, a hilly hamlet of Collesalvetti, from where the walk begins toward the local woods and the evocative springs of the Leopoldine Aqueduct, a historic hydraulic engineering marvel that once supplied the city of Livorno. Along the route, participants pause for a moment of reflection at the War Memorial, the commemorative heart of the day. The trail, suitable for everyone, combines the symbolic value of anti-fascist memory with the natural beauty of the Livorno hills.
The program alternates between moments of reflection and performance. The memory of the Resistance is brought to life through theatrical storytelling curated by local associations, focusing on the true stories of the partisan struggle and the citizens of Colognole. Music accompanies the entire event, featuring performances by the Collesalvetti Music Academy and concerts paying tribute to Italian singer-songwriters, particularly the work of Fabrizio De Andrรฉ. At noon, the community lunch brings everyone together in a spirit of conviviality.
Over the years, the Walk has expanded to include new initiatives involving the entire municipal territory, from the hamlet of Stagno to the town center, featuring sports events, institutional commemorations, and cultural activities. The event is promoted by the Municipality of Collesalvetti in collaboration with local associations and A.N.P.I., with the patronage of the Tuscany Region and the Province of Livorno, demonstrating how the values of freedom and peace remain vibrant in the community's civic tradition.
The 21st Peace Walk on April 25th, 2026, confirmed the success of the event, with over 1,500 people at the Colognole Multipurpose Area. Among the new features of this edition, the 1st Liberation Trophy, a Junior women's cycling race organized in Stagno together with the Livorno Cycling Team, A.N.P.I., and Arci Stagno, added a sporting dimension to the day dedicated to memory and peace.
The meeting point is the Colognole Multipurpose Area, a hamlet of Collesalvetti (LI). By car, it is easily accessible from the SS1 Aurelia and the Livorno-Florence (FI-PI-LI) expressway, taking the Collesalvetti exit. The nearest train station is Collesalvetti, on the Pisa-Vada-Cecina line.
The event takes place on April 25th, with the gathering at 10:00 AM and the ribbon-cutting ceremony at 10:30 AM. Admission is free. We recommend wearing hiking boots or comfortable footwear suitable for trails.
A community lunch is held at the Multipurpose Area; please note that food stalls generally accept cash only.
