The masked festival in the historic center of Frignano Modenese
The Pavullo Carnival is one of the most anticipated events of winter in the historic center of Pavullo nel Frignano, the main town in the Modenese Apennines, in the province of Modena (Emilia-Romagna). Every year, amidst confetti and streamers, the town squares fill with masks, music, and joy, in a celebration that keeps alive a folk tradition deeply rooted in the Frignano community.
The heart of the event is the masked parade along the streets of the center, accompanied by the Municipal Band of Pavullo which opens the procession with its music. The afternoon of celebration is designed especially for the little ones: there is plenty of entertainment, face painting, and games that involve both adults and children in the town squares, from Piazzale San Bartolomeo to Piazza Borelli.
Making the festival even warmer is the delicious snack from the Pro Loco of Pavullo, which with its food stand offers typical Carnival sweets and specialties. The Pro Loco, the true organizational soul of the event, works in collaboration with local parishes and with the patronage of the Municipality of Pavullo nel Frignano.
The Pavullo Carnival is part of a larger calendar that involves the hamlets of the territory: among the traditional events are the Benedello Masked Parade and, in spring, the famous Spring Masked Parade, with shows, entertainment, and costume parades organized by the groups from the hamlets. For children, there is also the Grand Children's Ball, with face painting, a comedy magic show, and entertainment.
Far from the grand historical carnivals, the Pavullo Carnival retains the genuine and family-friendly character of the Apennine festivals of Emilia-Romagna: a day of widespread, free celebration open to all, capable of uniting the community in the heart of Frignano. In case of bad weather, the event may be cancelled, but the Carnival spirit always finds new opportunities to liven up the town.
The 2026 edition was held on the weekend of February 7th and 8th in the historic center of Pavullo nel Frignano. Saturday, February 7th, from 3:00 PM, the festival kicked off with the parade of the Pavullo Municipal Band, accompanied by a delicious snack from the Pro Loco of Pavullo and the Scout Group, family entertainment, and face painting. Sunday, February 8th, the Carnival continued with the traditional Benedello Masked Parade in the hamlet of the same name.
The event, with free admission and organized by the Pro Loco under the patronage of the Municipality, was subject to weather conditions, with cancellation in case of bad weather.
Pavullo nel Frignano can be reached by car from Modena along the SS12 dell'Abetone e del Brennero (about 45 minutes). By bus, Pavullo is served by Seta intercity lines connecting Modena to the Apennines.
The festival takes place in the historic center, with the parade starting from Piazzale San Bartolomeo and entertainment in Piazza Borelli and the town squares.
Admission is free. In case of bad weather, the event may be cancelled: it is advisable to check for updates on the channels of the Municipality and the Pro Loco.
