Two Advent Sundays with stalls, choirs, and traditions in the Reggiano Apennines
The Christmas Markets of Cerredolo and Toano are two events that, on the first Sundays of December, bring the festive atmosphere to the hamlets of the Municipality of Toano, in the province of Reggio Emilia, in the heart of Emilia-Romagna. The event unfolds in two distinct stages: a first Sunday dedicated to the hamlet of Cerredolo and a second to the main town of Toano, thus involving the entire municipal territory in a widespread festive mood.
The streets and squares of the two villages fill with stalls offering handmade products, gift ideas, Christmas decorations, and gastronomic specialties from the Apennines. The food and wine stands offer the typical flavors of the Reggiano mountains, from dairy products to traditional sweets, accompanied by mulled wine and hot chocolate to warm up winter days.
The program combines moments of music and entertainment: choral concerts, shows, the inauguration of the Christmas tree, and entertainment designed for families. Among the most popular attractions in recent years are the walks with alpacas, entertainment for children with the arrival of Santa Claus, and the songs of local choirs, which fill the festively decorated squares with warmth.
One of the most evocative offerings is the guided tour of the Pieve di Toano, an ancient Matildic church linked to the figure of Matilda of Canossa, which opens its doors to visitors during the markets. The historical and landscape setting of the Reggiano Apennines makes this event an opportunity to discover a territory rich in history, traditions, and natural beauty, far from the major tourist circuits.
The Christmas Markets of Cerredolo and Toano are above all a community celebration, organized by the Municipality together with the Pro Loco associations and local organizations. Admission is free, and the family atmosphere makes it an ideal event for spending an Advent Sunday in the mountains, amidst traditions, flavors, and conviviality.
The Christmas Markets of Cerredolo and Toano return in December 2026 with the usual double event in the Reggiano Apennines: Sunday, December 6 in Cerredolo and Sunday, December 13 in Toano. The dates are indicated in the official calendar of the Municipality of Toano.
As in previous editions, a program rich in stalls, typical products, Christmas choirs, shows, and entertainment for children with Santa Claus, walks with alpacas, and guided tours of the Pieve Matildica is expected. Details on times and initiatives will be disseminated by the Municipality and the Pro Loco associations closer to the event. Admission remains free.
Toano and the hamlet of Cerredolo are located in the Reggiano Apennines, in the province of Reggio Emilia. They can be reached by car from the SS63 and from the provincial roads leading up to the mountains; the journey from Reggio Emilia takes about an hour. The nearest train station is Reggio Emilia, from which you can continue by car or public transport.
The markets take place on two separate Sundays in December, one in Cerredolo and one in Toano, generally during daytime hours. Detailed schedules are published by the Municipality of Toano closer to the event.
Admission to the markets is free. Some activities, such as guided tours of the Pieve, may require booking.
