The patronal feast of San Crispieri, a hamlet of Faggiano
The Patronal Feast of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli is the most significant religious and community event in San Crispieri, the only hamlet of the Municipality of Faggiano, in the province of Taranto, in the heart of the Ionian Apulia. Despite the small size of the village, which has only a few hundred inhabitants, the feast attracts faithful and visitors every year from neighboring towns and Taranto, united by their devotion to the Madonna di Costantinopoli, the patron saint of the small town.
The cult of the Madonna di Costantinopoli reflects the ancient Greek-Orthodox and Albanian roots of the Faggiano area. San Crispieri stands near the site of the ancient Casale Sanctorum Trium Puerorum, documented as early as the second half of the 13th century: in 1275, it was ceded by Charles I of Anjou to the monks of San Vito del Pizzo, while between the 15th and 16th centuries, the area welcomed an Albanian community that arrived after the death of the hero George Castriota Scanderbeg. It is in this interweaving of peoples and rites that the Marian veneration, still alive in the village today, is rooted.
The celebrations revolve around the church-sanctuary of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli, originally dedicated to Saint George and located along the road connecting San Crispieri to the territory of Lizzano. The building, partially compromised by time and subject to restoration work, preserves the altar and some frescoes that bear witness to its long history. It is right in front of the ancient sanctuary that the feast concludes with a fireworks display.
The solemnity falls every year on the first Tuesday of March and is preceded by days of spiritual preparation, with holy masses presided over by various local priests, moments of catechesis for children, and community initiatives. On the day of the feast, after the solemn Eucharistic celebration, the statue of the Patron Saint is carried in procession through the streets of San Crispieri, accompanied by the "Armonie" marching band from San Marzano di San Giuseppe. The day closes with the traditional fireworks at the sanctuary, in an atmosphere of celebration that combines popular faith and the identity of the village.
Beyond the devotional dimension, the feast has for years been characterized by a strong message of peace and hospitality: it involves catechism children, local schools, and solidarity initiatives. It is the occasion when the small community of San Crispieri rediscovers its roots and shares them with those who reach this authentic corner of the Taranto province.
The 2026 Patronal Feast of Santa Maria di Costantinopoli in San Crispieri (Faggiano) was spread over several days, all inspired by the theme of peace. On Saturday, February 21, the holy mass was accompanied by the "A flower of peace for Mary" initiative with catechism children; on Saturday, February 28, the "Peace Feast" saw a meeting between children and young migrants, with a food drive. The celebrations continued on Sunday, March 1, and Monday, March 2, the latter on the theme "Religions build bridges of peace".
On Tuesday, March 3, the day of the patronal feast, morning and evening masses were held, with the awarding of prizes for peace projects created by the children of the Madonna della Camera Comprehensive Institute. At the end of the evening celebration, the procession crossed the streets of San Crispieri with the "Armonie" band from San Marzano, closing with a fireworks display at the ancient sanctuary.
San Crispieri is a hamlet of the Municipality of Faggiano (TA), a few kilometers from Taranto and about 2 km from the center of Faggiano, along the road to Lizzano. By car, it is easily reached from the provincial roads connecting Taranto to the towns of the Ionian coast; the reference railway station is Taranto, from which you can continue by bus.
The celebrations are held every year around the first Tuesday of March, with several days of preparation in the preceding weeks.
Participation in all religious and civil celebrations is free and open to all.
