About Santa Maria delle Vergini

Every year, around the fourth Sunday of July, Scafati comes to a standstill to honor its patron saint: Santa Maria delle Vergini. From the opening of the novena on July 16th—marked by an evening procession and fireworks in front of the Town Hall—to the three main days on July 25th, 26th, and 27th, the city in the Agro Nocerino Sarnese area celebrates with solemn masses, extensive processions reaching every neighborhood, the Eggplant Festival, and free concerts in Piazza Vittorio Veneto. It is the quintessential identity-defining festival, passed down from generation to generation.

A devotion spanning three centuries

In Scafati, a town in the province of Salerno, Campania, the patronal feast of Santa Maria delle Vergini is more than just a date on the liturgical calendar: it is the moment when the entire city finds its sense of belonging. The veneration centers on the statue housed in the Mother Church, traditionally dated to 1713 and attributed to the Neapolitan sculptor Nicola Fumo. The iconography is rare and moving: the Virgin is depicted in anticipation, with a youthful face and open arms, welcoming two young women—one poor and one wealthy—under her mantle, a reminder that the Madonna's protection makes no distinctions. Hence the title "delle Vergini" (of the Virgins) and the enduring loyalty of generations of Scafati residents.

The church that houses her stands in the heart of the town, a stone's throw from the bridge over the Sarno River, with historical records of its existence dating back to the Middle Ages. Around this core, the community has built a centuries-old festival structure that blends liturgy, spectacle, and popular cuisine.

The novena: the city lights up on July 16th

The true signal that the festival has begun arrives in the middle of the month. On the evening of July 16th, the statue leaves the Mother Church and travels through the streets of the center, starting from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, with a stop in front of the Town Hall: this is the moment when the local administration, on behalf of all citizens, seeks the patron saint's protection. A fireworks display provided by the Municipality of Scafati accompanies the passage, before the Madonna is solemnly placed on the high altar, marking the start of the nine-day novena consisting of morning praises, the rosary, and evening mass.

The three main days: July 25th, 26th, and 27th

The heart of the festival falls around the fourth Sunday of July. Three days marked by solemn masses, also presided over by representatives of the Diocese of Nola, and above all by processions of the faithful that do not limit themselves to the historic center but methodically reach every neighborhood: Parco Vinicio, Terralavoro, Corso Nazionale, Parco Primavera, the Mariconda buildings, the industrial zone, and the Vetrari district. It is a precise and deeply felt pastoral choice: the Madonna "visits" everyone at home, even in the suburbs furthest from the Mother Church, and balconies are decorated as she passes by.

The secular festival: eggplant, brass bands, and music in the square

  • Eggplant Festival (Sagra della Mulignana) — established in 1987 and always linked to the patronal celebrations, it takes place in Piazza Vittorio Veneto with food stands dedicated to eggplant-based specialties, including gluten-free options.
  • Free concerts in the square — the festival intertwines with the municipal summer program, Scafati Summer, which brings big names in popular and Neapolitan music to Piazza Vittorio Veneto.
  • Fireworks — an unmissable moment, both at the opening of the novena and on the final evening.

Scafati and the Agro Nocerino Sarnese

With over fifty thousand inhabitants, Scafati is one of the most populous centers in the Agro Nocerino Sarnese, the plain between Mount Vesuvius and the Lattari Mountains, famous for the San Marzano tomato and a canning tradition that has set a global standard. The municipal territory borders the archaeological area of Pompeii and preserves its own Roman testimonies, starting from the remains found along the Sarno. Those arriving for the festival will find a lively, bustling lowland city where Marian devotion coexists with honest gastronomy: mozzarella, tomatoes, eggplant, and Neapolitan pastries.

What to expect

Visitors are often struck by the duration of the processions—walking for hours, under the sun and then in the cool of the evening—and by the cross-generational participation: children, the elderly, and entire families waiting for the statue on their doorsteps. This is not a festival built for tourism, and that is precisely what makes it authentic. We recommend choosing a spot along the route, asking a resident which neighborhood the Madonna will pass through, and then heading to Piazza Vittorio Veneto for the secular festivities, among stalls, lights, and music until late at night.

Santa Maria delle Vergini — edition 2026

The 2026 edition of the Scafati patronal feast opened on Thursday, July 16th, with an evening procession from Piazza Vittorio Veneto, a stop at the Town Hall, and fireworks provided by the Municipality, followed by the novena. The main days were Saturday, July 25th, Sunday, July 26th, and Monday, July 27th, with solemn masses and processions that crossed virtually every neighborhood in the city, from the center to Parco Primavera and the Vetrari district.

How the 2026 edition went

The 2026 calendar followed the traditional structure of the Scafati festival. Thursday, July 16th, at 8:00 PM, the patron saint's statue left Piazza Vittorio Veneto for a tour through the main streets of the center—via Chiesa Madre, via Duca D'Aosta, via Fiume—with the ritual stop in front of the Town Hall and the fireworks display provided by the Municipality of Scafati. Upon returning, the solemn placement of the Madonna on the high altar opened the nine days of the novena.

The following weekend concentrated the most intense moments: Saturday, July 25th, the 11:00 AM solemn mass was presided over by Monsignor Pasquale Capasso, Vicar General of the Diocese of Nola, followed at 5:00 PM by the procession towards Parco Vinicio and Terralavoro. Sunday, July 26th, featured double morning and afternoon processions, with Father Gennaro Romano at the 8:00 AM mass. Monday, July 27th, saw a mass presided over by Father Leonardo Falco and the final procession towards Santa Maria delle Grazie and the Vetrari district; in the evening, in Piazza Vittorio Veneto, the free concert by the Orchestra all'Italiana with a tribute to Renzo Arbore, part of the Scafati Summer program. On July 24th, the Eggplant Festival, established in 1987 and always linked to the patronal festivities, had already returned to the square.
