Three days of patronal festivities on the Marsica plateau, featuring a procession, traditional games, and concerts in Piazza San Rocco.
The Patronal Feast of Ovindoli, dedicated to Saint Sebastian the Martyr, is one of the most awaited summer events in the municipality of Ovindoli, a mountain village in the Marsica region of L'Aquila, nestled within the Sirente-Velino Regional Natural Park. Although the saint's liturgical feast day falls in January, the community also celebrates its protector in the heart of summer, when the village fills with vacationers and families originally from Ovindoli returning for their holidays.
The program spans three days in early August, alternating between religious and secular moments. The devotional heart is the solemn procession with the statue of Saint Sebastian, which winds through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by a brass band and heartfelt popular participation. The liturgical celebrations are complemented by the laying of a wreath and traditional rites that have marked the patronal feast for generations.
Alongside the religious dimension, the Patronal Feast offers a rich entertainment lineup. The afternoons are animated by traditional games for children and adults, while the evenings light up with live concerts in Piazza San Rocco, the beating heart of the festival. In recent editions, the stage has hosted well-known names in Italian music and popular cover bands, drawing a large crowd of residents and tourists to the square. There is no shortage of traditional markets, food stands serving high-altitude Abruzzese cuisine, and a fireworks display.
At over 1,300 meters above sea level, Ovindoli is one of the most renowned tourist destinations in inland Abruzzo, appreciated in winter for the Monte Magnola ski slopes and in summer for hiking and the cool plateau climate. The Patronal Feast of Saint Sebastian is the ideal opportunity to discover the village, its hospitality, and the traditions of the Marsica region, set in an exceptional natural landscape among the mountains of Abruzzo.
The Patronal Feast of Saint Sebastian returns to Ovindoli from August 6 to 8, 2026, as indicated by the official summer calendar of the Municipality of Ovindoli. As per tradition, the program combines religious rites in honor of the patron saint with a solemn procession, afternoon traditional games, and live music evenings in Piazza San Rocco.
The complete details of the musical lineup and schedules will be released by the organizers in the weeks leading up to the event. The Ovindoli summer continues with other appointments, including the Medieval Historical Pageant on August 19, which brings the village's squares and historic districts to life.
Provisional program for the three days (details and artists to be confirmed):
The detailed program with names and times will be published by the Municipality and the organizers closer to the event.
Ovindoli can be reached by car via the A24/A25 motorway (Celano-Ovindoli-Aielli exit), then by following the signs for the Altopiano delle Rocche. From L'Aquila and Avezzano, the village is also connected by local bus lines.
The main events are held in the historic center of Ovindoli and in Piazza San Rocco, with the procession moving through the village streets.
Events and concerts in the square are generally free of charge.
Ovindoli is a very popular holiday destination in August: it is advisable to book accommodation in advance. Evenings at this altitude can be cool, so bring a warm layer.
