The Patronal Feast of Stornarella

On April 2nd, Stornarella, a town in the Tavoliere delle Puglie in the province of Foggia, gathers around its patron saint, San Francesco da Paola. It is the most cherished day of the year for the local community: a day where religious observance and communal life merge through liturgical celebrations, prayer, and the traditional procession winding through the town center.

The heart of the festivities is the Mother Church of Maria Santissima della Stella, the town's most significant place of worship, originally built in the 17th century and reconstructed in the 19th. Following the solemn Holy Mass, the procession featuring the saint's statue begins, accompanied by the faithful and local confraternities.

San Francesco da Paola, Patron of the Cinque Reali Siti

San Francesco da Paola, the Calabrian hermit and miracle-worker who founded the Order of Minims, is a figure deeply rooted in the devotion of the Capitanata region. Stornarella is part of the so-called Cinque Reali Siti, the ancient district of the Tavoliere that also includes Orta Nova, Ordona, Carapelle, and Ortanova. In many of these towns, San Francesco is venerated as a protector, a sign of a shared devotion rooted in the rural history of this corner of Puglia.

Alongside the patron saint, the community also honors Maria SS. della Stella, the co-patron of the town, traditionally celebrated in August—a second devotional milestone that marks the Stornarella religious calendar.

Between Devotion and Village Life

As with many patronal feasts in Southern Italy, the April 2nd recurrence in Stornarella is both an act of faith and a moment of collective identity. The religious celebrations, with the procession and services in the mother church, represent the core of the day; around them revolves the participation of the entire community, for whom the patronal feast is an occasion to gather and rediscover their roots.

Stornarella, a Village of the Tavoliere

Stornarella has just over five thousand inhabitants and is situated in the cereal-growing plains of the Tavoliere, at an altitude of about 150 meters. Its name derives from the Sturnus vulgaris, or starling, a bird that populates the local wheat fields. Until 1905, it formed a single municipality with nearby Stornara. The territory, once a masseria (farmstead) where Frederick II established a Saracen colony in the 13th century, is today renowned for the production of high-quality cereals, wine, tomatoes, broccoli, and artichokes. The feast of San Francesco da Paola remains the moment when this small center in the province of Foggia most strongly reveals its devotional and rural soul.
