Three days of faith, brass bands, and music in mid-June in the village of the Middle Trigno Valley

Every year in mid-June, the village of Tufillo—a small municipality of a few hundred inhabitants in the province of Chieti, in the heart of the middle Trigno Valley—gathers around its patron saints, Saint Vito the Martyr and Saint Nicola the Bishop. The patronal feast unfolds over three days of celebrations that blend religious devotion with popular tradition, featuring processions, a brass band, evening concerts, and firework displays that bring the streets and squares of the historic center to life.
The devotion of the people of Tufillo to Saint Vito, celebrated on June 15th, has roots in the Middle Ages: tradition links it to the influence exerted on the territory by the Cistercian monks of the Abbey of San Vito and Salvo, active since the 13th century at the mouth of the Trigno River. Perched on a rocky spur overlooking one of the wildest stretches of the valley, Tufillo still retains the appearance of an ancient Apennine village, and the patronal feast is the occasion when the Vastese community gathers to renew its identity and bonds.
The religious heart of the festival is marked by Eucharistic celebrations and processions through the village streets, accompanied by the local brass band. The statues of the two patron saints are carried in a parade through the alleys, a ritual repeated from generation to generation. In the morning, the band travels through the streets for the traditional collection of offerings, while solemn masses mark the main moments of the days dedicated to Saint Vito and Saint Nicola.
The liturgical celebrations are accompanied by evenings of music and entertainment in the square, with concerts by bands and artists that draw residents, returning emigrants, and visitors from neighboring towns to the village. The evenings often conclude with fireworks that illuminate the silhouette of the perched village. The festivities are organized by the Parish of Santa Giusta and Santa Maria Assunta in collaboration with the Pro Loco of Tufillo, with free admission to all events.
Included in the rich calendar of the Tufillo summer—which features food festivals, "white nights," and cultural events—the patronal feast of Saints Vito and Nicola remains the most significant identity-defining moment of the year for this corner of inland Abruzzo. It is an authentic opportunity to discover a village off the beaten tourist path, amidst popular devotion, traditional flavors, and the hospitality of the Trigno Valley communities.
Local sources confirm the return of the patronal feast of Saints Vito and Nicola to Tufillo in 2026, included in the Tufillo summer calendar. The exact dates and program for the 2026 edition have not yet been published at the time of writing.
As per established tradition, the celebrations are expected for mid-June, around the feast of Saint Vito on June 15th, with the usual three days of religious rites, processions accompanied by a brass band, evening music in the square, and fireworks. The organization is managed by the Parish of Santa Giusta and Santa Maria Assunta with the Pro Loco of Tufillo. It is recommended to verify the final dates with the organizers.
