Castellaneta's patron saint festival, blending faith, folklore, and local identity
The Patronal Feast of Saints Nicholas and Francis of Paola is the most anticipated event of the year for Castellaneta, a town in the province of Taranto overlooking the ravines of the Ionian Puglia. Each year, during the second week of May, the entire community gathers around its two patron saintsโSaint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Francis of Paolaโin a celebration that intertwines faith, folklore, and civic identity.
The spiritual heart of the festival is the solemn Eucharistic concelebration in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Castellaneta, Monsignor Sabino Iannuzzi. After the mass, the evocative rite of handing over the city keys to the patron saints takes place, followed by the procession with the statues, which winds through the main streets to the church of San Michele Arcangelo. The devotional parade is accompanied by confraternities, the faithful, and brass bands in an atmosphere of intense participation. The return of the statues to the cathedral marks the conclusion of the religious celebrations.
Alongside the religious dimension, the civic festivities transform the center of Castellaneta into a grand open-air stage. Key highlights include:
The Patronal Feast is organized by the Confraternity of Saint Francis of Paola in collaboration with the Municipality of Castellaneta, the Diocese, and the Cathedral parish.
