About Castellaneta Patronal Feast

Every May, Castellaneta in the province of Taranto celebrates its patron saints, Nicholas of Bari and Francis of Paola, with one of the community's most heartfelt events. Religious rites, a solemn procession, illuminations, a traditional bandstand, fireworks, street food, and concerts bring the historic center and main squares to life, weaving together popular devotion, tradition, and civic celebration in an event that draws worshippers and visitors from across the Puglia region.

The Patronal Feast of Castellaneta

The Patronal Feast of Saints Nicholas and Francis of Paola is the most anticipated event of the year for Castellaneta, a town in the province of Taranto overlooking the ravines of the Ionian Puglia. Each year, during the second week of May, the entire community gathers around its two patron saintsโ€”Saint Nicholas of Bari and Saint Francis of Paolaโ€”in a celebration that intertwines faith, folklore, and civic identity.

Religious Rites and Popular Devotion

The spiritual heart of the festival is the solemn Eucharistic concelebration in the Cathedral of Santa Maria Assunta, presided over by the Bishop of the Diocese of Castellaneta, Monsignor Sabino Iannuzzi. After the mass, the evocative rite of handing over the city keys to the patron saints takes place, followed by the procession with the statues, which winds through the main streets to the church of San Michele Arcangelo. The devotional parade is accompanied by confraternities, the faithful, and brass bands in an atmosphere of intense participation. The return of the statues to the cathedral marks the conclusion of the religious celebrations.

The Civic Celebration

Alongside the religious dimension, the civic festivities transform the center of Castellaneta into a grand open-air stage. Key highlights include:

  • The traditional launch of the hot-air balloon in Piazza Principe di Napoli, which officially kicks off the festivities;
  • The lighting of the illuminations and the historic bandstand (cassarmonica) in Piazza Umberto I;
  • Roaming performances by stilt walkers and street artists and the "Santi Patroni in Sagra" street food initiative;
  • Performances by flag-wavers and band concerts in the square;
  • The evening fireworks display, a highly anticipated highlight of the festival;
  • Concerts and cabaret shows in the squares, with a funfair set up between Viale Europa and the municipal stadium square.

A Community Event

The Patronal Feast is organized by the Confraternity of Saint Francis of Paola in collaboration with the Municipality of Castellaneta, the Diocese, and the Cathedral parish. More than just a simple anniversary, it is a moment when the lower town and main squares fill with residents and visitors from neighboring towns, demonstrating how devotion to the patron saints remains a vibrant part of Castellaneta's identity and the heritage of Apulian popular traditions.
