About Domodossola Patronal Feast

Every year in mid-June, Domodossola pauses to honor its patron saints, Gervasius and Protasius, 4th-century martyrs from Milan. The festival is marked by a long novena in the Collegiate Church, sacred concerts, and the solemn evening mass on June 19th, followed by a procession carrying the statues of the saints through the historic center, past decorated balconies. It is a popular religious tradition that weaves together faith, music, and civic identity in the capital of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province.

A tradition at the heart of Domodossola

In the heart of the Alpine Piedmont, where the Ossola Valley opens the way toward Switzerland, the Patronal Feast of Saints Gervasius and Protasius is the most deeply felt religious and popular event in Domodossola, the capital of the Verbano-Cusio-Ossola province. Every year, around June 19th, the entire city gathers around its Collegiate Church to celebrate the two Milanese martyrs to whom the parish church is dedicated.

Who are Gervasius and Protasius?

Gervasius and Protasius were twin brothers, sons of Saints Vitalis and Valeria, who were martyred in Milan during the early Christian era. Their relics were discovered by Saint Ambrose in 386, and since then, their devotion has spread throughout Lombardy and the nearby Alpine valleys. In Domodossola, they are venerated as the city's patrons: the Collegiate Church is named after them, built between 1792 and 1798 based on designs by architect Matteo Zucchi and embellished by a masterpiece by Tanzio da Varallo in the San Carlo chapel.

The rhythm of the festival

The celebration is not concentrated in a single day but unfolds over more than a week. The spiritual core is the novena, recited every morning and evening in the Collegiate Church, which prepares the faithful for the solemnity. In the days leading up to June 19th, the parish church also hosts several concerts: choral and musical events in honor of the patrons that highlight the recently restored nave.

The evening of June 19th: solemn mass and procession

The highlight is the evening of June 19th, with the solemn mass followed by the traditional procession: the statues of the saints are carried on shoulders through the streets of the historic center, accompanied by the community and local authorities. For the procession, the parish invites residents to decorate their balconies and windows, distributing flags bearing the effigy of the saints: it is one of the moments when Domodossola shows its most authentic face, blending devotion with a village festival atmosphere.

Between faith and community

Beyond the liturgical dimension, the patronal feast is also an opportunity for the Ossola community to meet: moments dedicated to wedding anniversaries, the elderly, and families mark the days of the festival. It is a precious opportunity to discover the medieval historic center of Domodossola, its porticoed squares, and the nearby Sacro Monte Calvario, a UNESCO World Heritage site, during one of the liveliest weeks of the year.
