The ancient Walser devotional procession through the alpine pastures of Alagna Valsesia
The Rosario Fiorito is a devotional procession held in Alagna Valsesia, in the heart of the Valsesia valley, at the foot of the Monte Rosa massif. The tradition dates back to 1683 and represents one of the most authentic expressions of Walser culture, the ancient Germanic-speaking population that settled in the high alpine valleys of Piedmont during the Middle Ages. Every year, the event takes place on the first Sunday of October, marking the end of the alpine grazing season as a moment of thanksgiving and remembrance.
The procession begins in the early afternoon from the small chapel carved into the rock below the Flua wall, along the path leading to the Barba-Ferrero Refuge, facing the majestic Valsesian face of Monte Rosa. From there, the procession descends towards the valley, passing through the alpine pastures of Safejaz, Blatte, Bitz, Pile, and Stigu, until it reaches the Church of Sant'Antonio. The route covers an elevation drop from approximately 1,850 meters down to the 1,385 meters of the church.
Along the way, the procession pauses at seven symbolic stations nestled in the woods, at the pastures, and overlooking the valley. At each stop, the mysteries of the rosary are recited, accompanied by songs and prayers in the Walser language, the ancient Alemannic dialect still spoken in Alagna. It is an intense ritual where faith intertwines with the alpine landscape and the community's collective memory.
Many participants wear the traditional Walser costume, which is precious and richly decorated. The procession is attended not only by the inhabitants of Alagna but also by representatives from other Walser communities across the Alps: Rima, Rimella, Carcoforo, Macugnaga, and Gressoney. This gathering makes the Rosario Fiorito a key identity-defining event for the entire Walser diaspora in Piedmont and the Aosta Valley.
At the end of the route, the Church of Sant'Antonio welcomes the faithful, adorned with fresh flower bouquets and hundreds of lit candles, creating an atmosphere of deep reflection. The celebration concludes with Holy Mass and the singing of the Te Deum of thanksgiving, often dedicated to the community's deceased.
The Rosario Fiorito is also linked to an ancient Walser legend, which tells that on All Souls' Night, souls ascend towards the glaciers of Monte Rosa, and a white dove emerges from a crevasse to symbolize forgiveness. More than just an event, the procession is a journey into the intangible heritage of the Alpine Piedmont, recognized as a precious testament to the region's folk traditions.
For 2026, the Rosario Fiorito returns on its traditional date, Sunday, October 4th, the first Sunday of the month. The meeting point is scheduled for the early afternoon (approx. 1:30 PM) at the small chapel below the Flua wall, along the path to the Barba-Ferrero Refuge.
