The patronal feast of Lequile, in the heart of Salento
The Patronal Feast of Saint Vitus the Martyr is the most important celebration in Lequile, a town in the province of Lecce nestled in the Salento landscape of Puglia. For a few days at the end of June, the entire town gathers around its patron saint with a sequence of religious rites and civic events that involve the whole community, from the elderly to school children.
The religious heart of the festival is the solemn procession that winds through the streets of the town center, accompanied by the opening salvos of the festivities and traditional brass band concerts. In the evening, the sky over Lequile lights up with a fireworks display and the evocative release of hot air balloons. The main streets, from Piazza San Vito to Via Roma, are adorned with the famous Salento artistic illuminationsโauthentic architectural light displays that are a hallmark of Puglia's identity.
Two traditions make the Lequile festival unique. The Historical Pageant, organized by the Deputazione di San Vito, is a costumed re-enactment that brings to life the arrival of the saint's relics from Naples in 1722: performers dressed as nobles, clergy, and commoners, along with the musical group Li Pizzicati and flag-wavers, accompany a procession that also includes local school children. Alongside this is the Infiorata, an extraordinary composition of figurative panels made with colored salt, which transforms the streets into a carpet of sacred images.
Beyond the religious rites, the festival offers a rich entertainment program: concerts in the square, brass bands from all over Puglia, tribute band shows, and live music evenings with DJ sets. On Sunday morning, the traditional Market Fair opens, while the funfair keeps families entertained. It is the perfect opportunity to discover Salento's hospitality, local gastronomy, and the authentic atmosphere of a Puglian town in celebration.
The 2026 edition brought Lequile to life from June 26th to 30th with a program packed with religious and civic events, organized by the Patronal Feast Committee with the patronage of the Municipality of Lequile, the Province of Lecce, and the Puglia Region. The artistic illuminations curated by Davide De Donno (Decolux) lit up Piazza San Vito, Via Roma, Via Trieste, and other streets in the center.
Key moments of the event included the solemn procession on Saturday, the fireworks display with the release of hot air balloons, the colored salt Infiorata by the Deputazione di San Vito, and the major concerts in Piazza San Vito, ranging from the Vasco Live Tribute Band to live music evenings.
Funfair open from June 27th to 29th. Simultaneously, at the historic Palace, the collective exhibition ART&XPO featuring art, photography, and crafts.
Lequile is located a few kilometers south of Lecce and is easily accessible by car via the SS101 and provincial roads. The nearest train station is in Lecce, which is well-connected to Bari and the rest of Puglia; from there, you can continue by bus or car to Lequile.
Events take place in the historic center, centered around Piazza San Vito. The festival is traditionally held at the end of June.
All civic and religious events are free to attend.
